I was wondering if there is a difference between PVC and ABS plastic.

Does ABS harm a reef tank. I want to use ABS for my overflow, making a durso stand pipe.

Not being very knowledgable in chemistry, I can't say whether you could use it or not. But, here's some info on ABS

You might also want to post this in the chemistry forum for more knowledgable input.

All I know is that ABS is rated for drain/sewer lines and not for potable (drinking) water. Most PVC is, and it will say so right on the pipe. As far as composition, I'm not sure which chemical or process in particular might mean the difference between safe or unsafe for potable water.

I have used ABS many times. On overflow standpipes, and long sweep 90's. In a pinch I have even used ABS glue to glue PVC fittings.
