View Full Version : Joe's Cherry Oceanic 120 Gallon Tech Tank

Well, after three months, I'm finally getting started on this tank. It's been a long process, from tearing out parts of my walls and ceiling to replace the plumbing of the entire house with CPVC pipe (I had help from a plumber with this), to closing the walls and ceilings back up. Now the tank is moved to its' final resting place. I've run two dedicated 15 amp electrical circuits to the tank, and just yesterday plumbed the drains and the overflows. My lighting is the 48 inch Outer Orbit Pro (2 X 250 watts HQI)w/ T-5's. I think I will hang the light, instead of using the legs. Right now I'm trying to come up with something to sit the remote ballasts on. I don't want them sitting on my carpet. Anyway, here are some pictures of the cherry trimmed tank and stand, as well as the sump. Oceanic makes two color schemes of Tech tanks, the black with black trim, and the black with cherry trim.
This tank will be bare-bottom, with probably two vortechs for flow. I'm researching a skimmer now, and looking at a BM 250 as a possible candidate. I want one that doesn't need mods. It must work like a champ right out of the box.
Here's a few pictures;

Good looking start so far! I love the tech tanks.

Good to see another reefer from my area on here.

How did you know? I only live about fifteen minutes from there!!! I got a great deal on the tank and stand at the Anniversary Sale in March. Then went nuts on their "Wonderful Wednesdays" and their "Terrific Tuesdays". Were you over there during the sale?

InLimbo87, I'm going for a mixed reef, with minimal live rock to enhance flow. I'll probably have a fairly large fish population, with this being a BB tank.

somethingphishy, thanks. Another PA. Dutchman checks in "vonced".

Heh, Amish country, PA, and an Oceanic Tech? How could it NOT be That Fish Place!:p

I live about 40 minutes there, so I only get there once every other month, or so. I've been to a few of their sales, I think I was at the Anniversary sale. That place gets a bit nuts during the sales. Worst one was a tent sale last summer. What a frickin' zoo!

How much for the aquarium / stand ?? I've got an oceanic 72G bowfront aquarium with the cherry contrast collection stand that kills me due to the lack of space below the tank and I didn't know enough to purchase the reef ready version because the LFS didn't tell me that internal overflows were really handy when I bought it 2 years ago.

Joe
07/12/2007, 05:30 AM
OneDayMatt, I bought my tank and stand at That Fish Place in March at their annual Anniversary Sale. I paid ~$450 for the tank and ~$300 for the stand.

drummerreef, I know I'm lucky to be so close to TFP! I don't need to mail order anything, and they run "30% off" almost everything in the store about every other month. Their policy is only one item at 30% off, per purchase, but I buy one thing at a time, and receive the 30% discount on everything!!! The only thing I don't appreciate regarding TFP is their livesstock.....it's not the healthiest (maybe because they carry so much). There are better places close by to purchase livestock.

20 20, I live on the other side of the river, in York County (beside Sam Lewis State Park).

Thanks All,

Joe

I'm in York County also, about 5 miles off of 83 just north of Maryland. And I agree with you on the quality of their livestock. Best place I've found is Exotic Aquatics just north of Baltimore, the quality of their livestock (fish and corals) is usually great. And a great selection of SPS. They usually have a 25% off marine fish sale every weekend, too. Where are these 'better places for livestock' that you mentioned? I'd like to check em' out.

Hey, 20 20,

Thanks for the LFS tip, Exotic Aquatics, north of Baltimore!!!
Check out "Tony's Tropical Fish And Birds" right along Rte. 83 just north of York. Here is his website with directions..... He has quality livestock and liverock, knows his stuff, and will talk your ear off!!!

Yep.....As I said above, I bought it at "That Fish Place" retail store (the largest fish store in the world, according to them), during their annual Anniversary Sale. Then I also bought the stand during a 30% off day that they have weekly about every other month. The only thing they don't carry is a line of upper-notch skimmers, such as H & S, Deltec, BubbleKing, ATI, etc. Hence, I'm shopping for a skimmer.

Ummm....Because I can't fit my big butt in that thing anymore!!!! That rocking chair is the one my parents bought for me when I was born, so it's kind of special to me.

Hey reefnetworth,

My daughter just moved to Nashville about nine months ago. My wife and I were down to see her over Easter weekend. She took us to "Aquatic Critters" and that Aquarium Restaurant over at Opry Mills. Both real nice places. We took a behind-the- scenes tour of the aquariums at the restaurant. It was very impressive!!!
I was impressed with the quality of Aquatic Critters, but the prices were outrageous compared to That Fish Place.

Joe with a statement like that "I bought my tank and stand at That Fish Place in March at their annual Anniversary Sale. I paid ~$450 for the tank and ~$300 for the stand.

You got to post some kind of proof on that purchase price because that’s basically retailer cost!!!

hey joe what type of eheim pump did you go with? is it the 1260 or 1262? and did you decide on a skimmer yet for your setup?

Joe
07/28/2007, 08:27 AM
I got the eheim 1260 instead of the 1262, since it will do at least 4-5 times tank turnover/hour. I felt the 1262 was overkill, since I want to lessen the chance of bubbles returned to the tank. As far as the skimmer, I am leaning toward an H & S 200-1260 since this tank will be BB (check out my thread in the Fins Reef forum here;

Do they make tanks bigger than 120 in the tech series?

120's the biggest Tech tank Oceanic makes

The next tank sale, I believe, will be during their annual "Anniversary Sale". This usually happens late March, or early April, each year. You can check store flyers and get e-mails here (near the top of the page);

That's when I bought mine.

Anyone have long-term experience with the BM 250 skimmer?

Thanks,

Joe Sweet tank. I'm holding out on installing my new BM160 as I'm seriously thinking of upgrading from my 75g to 90g Tech. BTW, I seriously think you need a BM250 as the BM200 is more than enough to handle your system that you're setting up. To be sure, contact Ed at KMA Int'l, I've found that he really knows the BM line extremely well. Here are the specs:
ATI BM200 Internal ~ $549
Clearance Needed: 13"L x 9.5"W x 21.25"H
Dimensions: 12.7"L x 8.6"W x 19.2"H
Energy Consumption: 22 watts
Air Draw: 1,100lph
Suggested Capacity: up to 200g heavy, 250 normal

As for long term BM250 users, do a search for "BM250 skimmer" on the Filtration forum and the ReefGeek sponsored forum and you'll see a few threads. I like the one from mrcrab.

klam114- i just bought my tech 120, and i made a deal with the lfs for me giving them some lr they would give me cost on the tank. i paid 698. witch is cost through all-glass for the tank and the suggested retail is 823. so 300 bucks for a tech 120 is stealing it.

-joe did you ever get a chance to check out the das line of skimmers?

Joe
08/03/2007, 06:57 AM
Yes I did. They were all external, right? At least it appeared that way to me. I need internal, because the Oceanic model 3 sump takes up most of the room in the stand. I even had to take the top off the stand to get it in there. The Orca website didn't even rate their skimmers on tank size, so I was lost.......

good luck with your new tank i wish i had the money right now to get a new one im thinking 125 or 150 but that means all new equipment except for the skimmer and i really don't want to shell out 1000 for lights again and build a new sump so i might just stick with what i got for now but you should up load more pics. so i can live through you!!! ahah

looking very good...im sure this tank will look great since you're getting all the right components!

question...i noticed you are using some flex-spa tubing for the drains...are they glued into the bulkheads or placed around the bulkheads? are those 1" bulkheads?

Joe

Hey, czerbe,

I haven't really done anything new. I'm looking at skimmers.

Gooli,

The flex-spa tubing is just slipped over the barbed ends of the 1 inch drain bulkheads. The returns are 3/4 inch.

Update......I've hung the light, and as you can guess, it was more involved than installing the hanging hardware by screwing the cables to joists in the upstairs floor! I wanted to install the fixture between the joists, as luck would have it. So, I had to cut holes in the drywall ceiling in my family room and install 2" X 6" inch boards between the joists, so I had something to screw the Current Outer Orbit 250 watt MH/T-5 fixture hanging hardware into. This fixture is heavy, and I didn't trust using the supplied "butterfly" nuts that came with the hanging kit. Anyway, here are a few pictures of the install.....
Did I mention I HATE drywall??????

looks good. How many inches off the surface of the water will that be? Looks like it might be a little tall. The closer to surface gives better penetration, but will add more heat to the tank. I have my AB 250s six inches off the surface and I am evaporating 2 gal/day with a temp of 81 F in the summer.

Joe
08/16/2007, 03:42 PM
Hi, Mike,

I have this fixture about ~7 inches off the top of the future water level now, but the hanging kit is fully adjustable (up & down). You're right about temp. & evap........;)

Just ordered a 120 myself. Tagging along. One question though: why an eheim for the return pump? I've been trying to figure out why they cost more than other pumps (I've looked at the mags and quiet ones).

Joe
08/20/2007, 12:30 PM
Hi, msn711,

To answer your question regarding the Eheim; I have read many times that Eheim pumps are the best, and quiet. That's the opinion I've come to after quite a few years of research. Some people may disagree. I will find out for myself, because I've not had an Eheim before. As far as the price, I bought this Eheim 1260 for ~$ 70.00 at "That Fish Place", during one of their "Terrific Tuesday" sales (30% off almost everything in the store!!). At prices like that, why not try the best?
Thanks for your interest, and good luck with your 120 tank!!! Let's see some pics!!!!!

Update......I've hung the light, and as you can guess, it was more involved than installing the hanging hardware

Wait, why isn't it just this simple? I was thinking about hanging one in my apartment, but if it's that complicated, I'll go back to looking at fixtures.

I'd love to post some pics, but the 120 isn't here yet. Hopefully, Wed.

"Wait, why isn't it just this simple? "

It would have been very simple if I had something , like a floor joist, to screw the hanging hardware into.....I suppose I could have used the butterfly nuts that came with the kit, and hope the drywall was strong enough to hold this fixture. I chose to "sleep well" and probably over-build, in this situation. Does anyone else believe I over-did it with hanging this light? Here is a thread I responded to, and was chastised by another member for over-compensating..........

Installing A Light (http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=10569778#post10569778)

Can't wait to see some progress. I went with the same lights on my 120, but I'm using the legs. So it's probably only 3-4" off of the glass, but the temps have been ok so far. I'm still acclimating everything to the new lights, so the halides are only running for 4 hours.

Update.......

I finally decided to purchase an H & S A150 skimmer from Ed Lum at KM Associates. I must say, a very friendly, helpful person to deal with! I also went to "That Fish Place" yesterday afternoon and purchased two Vortechs. The 30% Off sale was going on there, so I got them for $230.00 each. Not bad, I think.
I still need the controller and the battery back-up for these. TFP doesn't carry them yet. Gosh, I hate to pay full price!!!! Also, Ed has me talked into a nitrate reactor, I think.:eek1:

That's all for now.....

Joe, thats a sweet tank. Good job on the price. I too just purchased the same tank and stand but in black. Then my lfs called me and told me that he got in an oceanic 150 ultimate from a guy that wrote a bad check nad asked it I wanted it for 400. I jumped on it. The only problem is it wasnt drilled. He said he would drill it for me becasue the bottom of the ultimate is not tempered. Now my delima is to have stand pipes or go with an overflow? How is the oceanic sump? Is it worth the money? I too plan on buying the vortech's, but I will be using an Ae tech skimmers reef devil delux.

Joe
10/20/2007, 06:52 AM
Currentking,

That's a hell of a price for that 150 ultimate!!!! Post pics as soon as you get it. That will be one awesome tank!!!

The Oceanic sump is very well-built, and weighs a ton. I had to remove the top of the Tech stand to fit it in there. It's just a hair too big to go through the side doors. I think it's worth the price, but I didn't pay retail on that either. I got 30% off from That Fish Place.
Start a thread on your new tank when you get it, and pm me, so I can subscribe!!!

Thanks,

Joe Ahhh, so you picked up the H&S A150, great choice. I have that on my 180g and it's the best skimmer I've ever had on that tank. Your 30% off prices are killing us, I hope you know that. Don't need to keep rubbing salt in our wounds. I also have the H&S 110SR Denitrator and works like a charm. In a fish only tank that has always been 50-65ppm range, it's consistently below 15ppm. I need to remeasure with a more accurate test kit to know what is the nitrates really at. Congrats for finding KM Associates Int'l in San Francisco, I purchase both my new skimmers and the denitrator from them as well.

Another update.....with pictures. Ed Lum at K & M Int'l (where I purchased the H & S skimmer) has been invaluable with his willingness to help me with the plumbing of the sump. What an expert! I really need help with this part of the build! If anyone has any other suggestions after viewing the pictures below, please offer your advice.

For people wanting to purchase an Oceanic Tech tank, here is the way to tell if the tank you are buying has the front panel of "Starfire" glass....underneath the bottom tank glass, the small, white tag shows the persons name that built the tank, and a code for the date of manufacture. If the tag has a date of October 2006 or later, you have the Starfire front pane. As this example shows, the "K' (eleventh letter of the alphabet) indicates the 11th day, the 11 shows the month, and the 06 shows the year. Any tank manufactured prior to October of '06 has the "Ultra-Clear" glass.

Hi, Bobby,

I hear you on the metal clamps. I'll replace them. Yes, I have to get some filter socks from TFP. Thanks again for the advice.

Yes, I concur with the metal clamp, use plastic instead. You can always use tie straps on the vinyl tubing that is over a barb fitting, it's cheap and works perfectly.

Also, just a suggestion, plumb the 2 exhaust over to the front left corner where the skimmer's exhaust is and use a BIG filter sock bag (200 micron) to filter out all the detritus. Your beautiful sump will stay cleaner and lower nitrate buildup. Also, the front is much easier to change out the filter sock every few days.

What a nice setup, so clean looking. If you plumb the exhaust of the overflow to the front left, you'll have space for the denitrator and phosban reactor on the front right where the PVC plumb was emptying into the sump. LOL

Since you're in line every Tuesday for the 30% sale, want to pickup something for me too? J/K

I see you have a recirc skimmer. I've never used a recirc skimmer in-sump. Do you know if it'll run right with water "around" it?

Joe
10/29/2007, 05:26 PM
Hi, AngeloM3

A recirculating skimmer (external) installed in-sump will not be affected in any way by having water "around" it. At least, this is what I'm told by Ed at KM Assoc., Int'l. and Klam114, a member here. A recirc. skimmer is about 15-20% more efficient than an in-sump model. The pump on a recirc. has only one job to do, and that is to infuse air into the skimmer. A pump on an in-sump model must not only infuse air, but also pump water into the skimmer. I haven't run this skimmer yet, so I'm no expert. Dee, "Reef Sponger", has the same model I do. Dee, how about it?

The nicest thing about a recirculating skimmer is that you can run it in sump or externally, so you have a CHOICE. There's a big misconception that recirculating skimmers must be run externally. I run mine in sump, right next to the denitrator.
<IMG SRC="http://usera.imagecave.com/Reef-Sponger/Reactors/110SRUnit.jpg">
The safety in running it in sump is if there's ever an accidental overflow, the skimmer is in sump already. Also, when removing the pump for quarterly cleaning, the water that empties out of the skimmer when the pump is removed, just empties into the sump. BTW, the water inside the skimmer is clean, the waste is in the collection cup, another misconception. The H&S A150 is pretty much completely immuned to any sump water changes or water around it as long as the sump water level is below the exhaust T fitting, which I think is 17"H.

I was just kidding about shopping for me. I don't really need anything. But I have my eye on a 90g Tech for a long time now, but just too busy with travels to even think about switching tanks.

I returned the two original Vortech pumps I purchased, and bought two of the new Vortech Wireless Wave pumps. Thanks to That Fish Place for allowing me to return the originals. Here they are mounted to my tank (one on each side).
I have the new skimmer in my bathtub at the moment. It's running with a 10:1 solution of water and vinegar, to remove any manufacturing oils in it. I'll let it run for about one~two hours. Then, I'll run it with some saltwater and some skimmate from my small skimmer on my other tank.

Hi, Matt,

I can't thank you enough for taking the older MP-40's back, and hooking me up with the new ones. I haven't been able to enjoy them yet, as I'm filling the tank with water now. It is going so slowly that I was at TFP last evening and picked up an Aquatec 8800 booster pump. I can't seem to figure how to adjust the flow on this pump, as it didn't have any directions packed with it. I'd call Wayne, as he helped me pick it out, but he's off the next three days. Do you have any idea (or anyone, for that matter)?

Thanks,

I have water in the tank, and I moved some live rock from my old tank over about a week ago. I also added about fifteen gallons of the old tank water, to jump-start the cycle. The two vortechs make a wave about one inch high on either side of the tank. They are set to run in "pulse - anti-synch" mode. It seems really nice, but nothing is moving in the tank at this point. it will look better when some fish and corals are in there. I need a little more live rock.

Great choice in a skimmer! I can't tell by you latest picture with the water in the sump, but in this picture, it looks like you'll have the water from the skimmer returning to the sump below the water line. I had some inconsistent pressure inside the skimmer this way and had trouble dialing in the skimmer. In the H&S skimmer thread, I believe they recommend having the water exist above the sump water line to improve skimming. I know it worked for mine.

Great set up by the way!

Thanks for the advise....You are correct, my skimmer outlet is below the water line in the sock. Do you think that is why I'm getting TONS of micro-bubbles through the sump and up into the main tank? They have no bouyancy, so they just stay in the water column. It's getting on my nerves!!!:(

I'ts possible. I'd look at the H&S / Fins Reef section in the Sponsors section. Tons of useful information on fine tuning your skimmer.

How long has the water been in the tank/sump? If it's new water, that might have something to do with the extra microbubbles too.

Hey just my 2 cents. Have you tried turning the sponge in your sump. I have a oceanic sump #1. With sponge turned that it drops right in, my wter level is even in my sump. I turned it the other way pushing it down, doing this made my water level drop on the return side. This makes my sump water level uneven. I wunder which is the correct way. It cut the crap out of micro bubbles.

Joe
11/22/2007, 11:03 AM
Hi, New to the reef,

Thanks for the idea. I think I know what you are doing, but my sponge is the same size either way. The model 3 sump baffle also has three "slots" cut in on the overflow side, so the water can flow through the baffle (straight UNDER the sponge) without going through the sponge. Is your Model 1 this way? Both sides of my sump stay the same level with water, no matter what I do, because of those slots that are cut into the bottom of the baffle.

Joe

Jeremy

Joe
11/22/2007, 11:20 AM
Yes, I push the sponge all the way down, but there are plastic pieces running along the bottom of the inside of the baffle, holding the sponge up above those slots. The sponge mostly floats up to the top of the baffle anyway......:(
Any other ideas?

Wow. My sponge will float one way. The other way if I push it down it stays down. Maybe your sponge is different. Is it the one that came with the sump? My next trip to That Fish Place I will check out the oceanic replacement sponges.

Joe
11/22/2007, 11:45 AM
Jeremy,

Thanks for the quick responses! Yes, my sponge is the original one that came with the sump. I'm not sure it would matter if it stayed down at the bottom of the overflow anyway. The water, and those micro-bubbles, still are able to flow through those slots at the bottom of the baffle.

Im with you on that I am stationed on APG and I go up to TFP atleast 1-2 months just to get dry goods. But I will never put there corals in my tank they do not look as good and have a sick feeling on them. I always go to Exotic Aquatics. There stuff is good and I get 10% everytime I buy something.

But I will never put there corals in my tank they do not look as good and have a sick feeling on them. I always go to Exotic Aquatics. There stuff is good and I get 10% everytime I buy something.

usmc121581,

Thanks for your service to our Country!!!:D

I haven't made it down to Baltimore yet, but I plan to check that place sometime. Last Friday morning, I passed some Military Hummers on Route 83 North, in Maryland. It looked like they were going on maneuvers. You weren't in one of them, were you?

No that might have been the Army doing something. I work on a Army base and sometimes dont understand the things they do. LOL. One day I might travel to Allentown. I hear theres a pretty good LFS up there. I forgot the name. Also I like to say its nice to see there are people within a short driving distance that are into reef keeping cant find them done here, and that still support the military.

Hey New to the reef,

I was at That Fish Place today, and I checked their replacement sponges for the Oceanic sumps. All three sizes are the same either way you turn them. I don't know what kind of sponge came with yours.
"turbonegro" and "dwead" (both R/C'rs), were at my place on Tuesday, and they advised me to get rid of the sponge, and fill the sump up with alot more water.:D

Hey Joe, Nothing wrong with using sponges, it definitely keeps microbubbles down to a minimum so none returns to the tank. But you need to rinse them out weekly along with your collection cup cleaning. If you get lazy, the sponge becomes a nitrate factory, then you really need that denitrator. I also agree that your sump water level should be higher. When your pumps are running, I would increase the sump water level to 1" above the pump partition, at the very most. No real need to have it any higher than that.

I went to TFP Wednesday, and picked up four Green Chromis. Everything is looking good, parameter-wise, so far.:D I don't usually buy their fish, but my favorite shop, Tony's Tropical Fish, retired. I have to think about how I'm going to elevate my rocks, before I get anymore, also.

Joe good choice on the green chromis as a starter fish. I left a message with my friend about the rock. Did you put more water in your sump?

Hey Joe,

You know I've been kicking that idea around and just use a filter sock.

Thanks

I'm mixing the saltwater now, to increase the level in the sump around 2~3 inches above the baffle. Then I'll remove the sponge. I placed a bag of carbon in the baffle yesterday. I think I'll take your advice and get a phosban reactor, and one to also run carbon in, as this bag leaves alot to be desired. The damn carbon floats, and that is a pain!

By the way, Bobby, I also took your recommendation and threw in four red-legged hermits. I wanted scarlet-reef, but they had just sold out.

Yea, I am taking turbonegro's and dweab's advice, and getting rid of the sponge and raising the water level. When you stop and think about it, more water is a GOOD thing!

It's a 48 inch Current Outer Orbit Pro 2 X 250 watt T-5 combo unit. I love this light, but the fans are a little loud. I may look into replacing them.http://www.current-usa.com/outerorbithqit5ho.html

Good Looking Progress, did you plumb that skimmer to your overflow drain line?.....

Reef Sponger

I would say that the skimmer's input is coming directly from the Megaflow drain at the bottom of the tank. :D <a href=showthread.php?s=&postid=11224603#post11224603 target=_blank>Originally posted</a> by Joe
