Awesome! I can't wait to see them myself. I missed the thread from yesterday -- I must say I have been a little out of it from the time zone switch. Thanks to all :D

I was just there this afternoon, they had some pretty nice pieces in. I wonder which ones are yous guys'.

Not a member of the club yet, just thought I'd chime in. Speaking of which, do you guys frown on nano reefs? I don't have a large tank right now and I'm just not 100% sure I could actually contribute anything to the club just having an 8 and 10gal. But I've been in the nano reef scene for quite a while... if you've even been to the Aquatic Critter they usually have a little tank setup on the counter. I actually set up the first nano reef there in the store when I managed to convince Ken that it was possible. That was... jeeez... 5 years ago? Anywho, I'm rambling now and this post is getting longer that it should've been, but anywho, like I said, what's you guys' views on nano reefs?

At times I think that I'd prefer the smaller tanks. It's easier on my wallet to find the small frags. :D

I only have a 29 (bascially fish only), 20 (mostly rock), 12 (mixed coral) and my favorite, a 5 gallon (zoas and mushrooms).

Awwwwww... I'd have to get rid of my huma? But the names soooo fun to say!

I kinda followed you here BTW. The MTRC formed shortly after I joined the Navy and I learned about it through Val and Vern... I don't think they're in the club anymore, no idea what happened to them actually. But I've seen you around on the Nano-Reef forums and then popped in and saw you here so I thought I'd test the water. Some people don't like nano reefs so I just had to check.

But yeah, they are alot easier on the wallet. I felt so bad about frag hunting at Ebay all the time that I starting buying pieces of actual coral just to ease my mind... now I have an ugly mushroom leather (not a big fan of them) but I do have some nice acropora and monitpora frags, plus I don't know how many different kinds of zoas and shrooms. 25 bucks for a nasty leather and I don't remember how much for the hammer, but small price to pay for piece of mind... And I'm ramble'ng again, sorry.

I'll see what I can do to try to email the PDF application to whoever I need to and I'll get my dues started on paypal then. :)

Thanks.

Actually followed Fanof49ASU.

Well, not really followed, but saw him on the Nano-Reef forums and noticed his location. When I was looking through here saw a post from him, followed it down to this forum and figured that yous guys would probably be okay with the nano thing.

I'm still in the old mindset. When I joined the Navy and had to tear down my tanks, nanos weren't very popular. And even though I had kept my 3gal stable, happy, and growing... we still had people like Dr. Ron telling us that it was impossible, or at most very hard to do so. Even when I was working at the Critter I had people telling me that nanos were retarded and that they wouldn't work. "Nothing smaller than a 55." Heard that I don't know how many times.

Anyways, this is getting way off topic! Atleast... -I'm- getting way off topic.

Looked at the zoas in Ebay, looked great. Looking forward to joining you guys. I'll try to make every meeting that I can, but I can't promise anything with meetings at the Critter... haven't been there since I went to pick up my final paycheck... bad blood, at least on my part. But, oddly enough, you can still see me in the commercials. lol

And I rambled again..

Short version.
Great zoas, looking foward, thanks again.

Welcome, Succi!

No frowning on nano's here. I'm actually trying to figure out how I can work a nano into the budget. I was browsing some stuff last night. I'm really not up to speed at all on nanos, and my biggest concern is how to keep the water quality high (skimming) but have it be quiet and compact, and how to keep them topped off so that the salinity doesn't swing too much if say this were a nano for my office and I wasn't there for a few days.

Most people don't run skimmers on a nano, my 10g has a AC110 modded into a fuge and with regular water changes the water is perfect. Top off is more of a problem though, I'm dumping in almost 2 qts every night.

I keep a top on my small tanks. It reduces the topoff greatly.

I did use a top until I went to the sunpod, the glass top cut the light too much and made shadows.

Ah....I can see that.

I use the Nova Extreme t-5's and they're GREAT.

My 5 gallon nano was VERY easy! My neighbor has it set up now and put a glass top on ands it evaporates like 1/4 cup of water a day. I wouldn't top mine off for days sometimes and then dump in a ton of water with no problems :). No skimming, very few water changes and stuff grew like mad in that tank. Granted it was all softies but My hairy shrooms from that tank made me a ton of money they split so regular!

When I was first interested in a SW tank about 5 years ago I was also told no way on anything smaller than at least a 40. I stayed out of SW because of the fear the store instowed upon me but I did buy a SW book that got me a nice basic understanding of the cycle and workings of a tank. Times have definetly changed.

Esabasbasard, Welcome to MTRC!! You are more than welcome and will find the folks on here are very freindly and helpful!! :) I think a huge majority of the members have nanos going.

Thank you for letting me know they were in. I didn't mean to offend you in any way (and certainly did not mean to "spit" in your face. To be honest, I was just at work, and wanted to just let everyone know that I was on top of the situation and would go by and pick them up as soon as possible. Please PM me if you bad feelings regarding my post.

As for the zoas: Sean/Ebay gave us a pretty good deal. We can talk about the price tag at the meeting if anyone is interested since it was club funds that purchased the zoas. As for the colony itself, there are probably ~150 polyps, maybe a little more. There are at least 3 different types, but mostly are orangish/pink with a blue ring. Some of the others are blue/purple with a green skirt. There also looked like there were 10-15 eagle eye zoas. There very likely could be other types on there as well because only about 1/2 of them were opened up when I bought the colony.

c_stowers,
I'll be able to make the meeting and want to bring something. Do we have a rough head count? I thought I'd bring soft drinks but if there is a greater need for something else let me know.

I think the rough head count is around 20-25. Soft drinks and sides (chips and stuff) is I think all we lack. I'm glad your going to be able to make it.

For quite and ease, I'd think about those little Oceanic BioCubes. Got one of the 8gals from Ebay and it's going REALLY well... actually better than my 10gal.

As far as skimming they don't really have many good products that are affordable for nanos... but you can DIY pretty much anything you'd need. A little minijet-404 or 606, airline tubing, some acrylic from homedepot, and weld-on, and in @45mins you got yourself a skimmer.
http://www.nano-reef.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=58540
Of course, the HomeDepot in Bellevue has pretty much nothing... but after a few minutes of looking around I found everything that I needed... minus the weld-on. Ordered that online before I found out there was a place locally that sold it.

Unfortunantly, that skimmer won't fit into the 8gal, but works wonders on a 10. For the 8... if you really wanted to run a skimmer... then you can get the little Fission Nano Skimmer from Fosters and Smith... it's mostly crap, but does skim. Really really wet skim, but still works... I guess. That'll fit in the first chamber, or second chamber if you wanted it there. But for the second chamber I'd go with so LR rubble (instead of the bioballs that it comes with) and chaeto. Again, for the chaeto... more DIY. Gonna have to scrap the black paint off the glass behind that chamber and DIY some lighting from HomeDepot. Also would probably want to upgrade the return pump to something a minijet 606.

That's all optional though, right out of the box you can just add your LS, LR, heater, and saltwater and you're good to go. For an office it has a nice finished look and runs really quite. I don't know how much the light will support, it's only 2 x 18w PCs (1 daylight, one actinic) but for now I have some GSP, xenia, mushrooms, zoas (which are spreading like crazy already)... everything's doing really great and it requires almost no work. Water change once a week or so, top off as needed(rarely).

So, if it's sitting on your desk, I'd say the grand total would be something like... maybe $240 bucks or so? I think... can't remember the cost of the tank, but for you guys that already have big tanks, a little LS from them will take off of the costs, as well as any LR pieces you have in the big tank... so... hmmm.. actually I guess the cost of the whole setup for you would probably just be tank and heater. So maybe $200.

Speaking of chaeto... anyone that visits Ebay often and has chaeto, you know... if you wanted to drop some off there and either lemme know here, or tell Sean to lemme know, that'd be awesome... just and idea... you know... ... ... yep.

crumbletop
07/17/2007, 09:05 PM
I've got a 150W viper HQI clamp on lamp that I could use for the lighting as long as the PC portion of the top comes off, and there is a decent space on the back to clamp the lamp on. That plus the stuff you mention and I think I'd be good to go except for figuring out some way to keep it topped off over long weekends.

Scucci
07/18/2007, 12:22 AM
Well, I guess the PC portion COULD come off... ... I'm sure that the lights are the lion's share of the cost. So, take them off might as well get a cheaper tank.

I was eyeballing the little $50 6.5 gallons at Petco, apparently someone here in Nashville already has one setup... should still work with the clamp on.
http://archive.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1101742

Little heater, little powerhead, some water, rock and sand and you're set. I don't have much trouble with the 10 or the 8 as fas as evaporation goes... I top off the 10 every 3 days or so. The 8 never gets topped off because the hood helps cut back on the evaporation, I just adjust my water mix when I top off to keep the salinity where I want it. Maybe one of those little top off switches and jug of water with one of those little water pumps that look like air pumps... you know the ones? I don't know... just tossing out ideas, I'm sure you have already thought of something better.
