My reds LOVE light, i have a few different varities. I would give them as much light and flow as i can and ride it out.

I'm guessing it's a flow issue. Shrooms in general like lower flow areas.

My reds wouldn't open up lower in the tank, now they're about 6 inches below 150 hqi and they have been opening up and splitting regularly.

I dont find that to be the case, some shrooms yes but a blanket statement like that grouping all shrooms together i dont totally agree with. My reds do awesome in high flow/light, so do my tongas, blue Discosoma and orange and yellow florida rics just to name a few.
I would experiment with the coral placement/light/flow giving it a week under each different condition before trying something new.
