hello,
i will be setting up a 40gal breeder witha 29gal sump soon.

i would like to get an inline return pump and i would like to have apx 500gph at the return.

the sump will be in the stand directly below the display, so 4'-6' should be a safe assumption for plumbing heights. 3/4" PVC will be used to plumb the system.

any recommendations/suggestions/advice would be great, and as always, thansk for looking!

That's a lot of flow through the sump...

Having said that, an Eheim 1260 should give you about that much flow at 5' or so.

I also think that's too much flow through sump.
3-5x turnover is good for sump return, additional flow from loop or PH's.
Eheim is my fav, oceanrunner is also good.

ok. thanks for the advice. im sure if i downsize the pump (like you both suggested) and use a few nice powerheads in the display, i could still have some nice flow.

thanks! i look into eheim!

also,
what would you recommend? i looked at the eheim 1250. would that be OK?

what would be a good amount of flow at the return? 200pgh? 300?

i use a sump now, but it was all equip that was given to me, so ive never had to choose the return pump.

Is that 3x-5x turnover rule mean total tank vloume, sump volume, or display volume? In other words, in a 40 gallon tank with a 30 gallon sump what gph am i looking for: 350gph, 200 gph, or 150 gph?

BTW, anyone know where I can find the head loss calculator?

Ocean runners are pretty good and quiet and low on watts and heat
