Ive seen a lot of people using starboard to cover the bottom of their tanks when using a BB system. However, starboard can be pricey and i was wondering if anyone had ever tried using plain plastic, styrofoam panels, or even that thick plastic cutting board material.

Any HDPE will be a great "alternative" to starboard (starboard is really just HDPE with a name), so cutting boards that are HDPE will also work just fine.

I remember seeing a tank build thread awhile ago that used a cutting board from wal-mart (a common kind, white with a handle) cut down to size.

technically you don't need anything on the bottom of the tank, you could just put the rock right on the glass/acrylic - people just use the starboard to protect the bottom of their tank from breaking/scratching and esthetics.

Most people use cutting boards in their nanos. I was planning to go this route, but I got a goby and shrimp pair, so they love to burrow in the sand.
