What type of overflow is it? A pic would help to determine a problem. Also is it the overflow making the noise, or where the water returns to the sump?

You can always take the drain pipe into the water so you do not get the "crashing" sound in you sump.

Is it the overflow itself, or the drain pipe? If drain pipe, which end?

you can insert a small piece of tubing into the intake to facilitate the air flowing out and to minimize the "gurgling" sound.
you can also try to use a small piece of sponge to slow the flow and dampen the sound.

Condom with a pinhole is good in that case, bad in others.

You can get a "Aqua Silence", it is built for use in overflow
box to stop the waterfall effect noise. I know some
LFS carry it.

Pictures for something like this helps alot in suggesting solutions.
Exiting the water below the water line like Mark suggested is what I do and works great.
