View Full Version : What do you change at night?

I've seen it mentioned in a few places now that you can/should turn off powerheads to simulate night mode for the fish and create a more relaxing environment. Is this a generally accepted practice, do people turn off powerheads at night? Also how long do you leave lunar lights on, all night or only part of the night? Are there any other things that are changed or modified during the night period?

Thanks.

my change is to only run moonlights through the night, until daylight is present in the room. pumps (powerheads) run 24/7

I don't recommend turning off your powerheads at night. Less oxygen is a bad thing especially at night, imo. Tunze controller can be set up for night mode, but I've never messed with one to know if it's beneficial or not. I wouldn't turn your flow completely off at night is what I'm saying. I keep my moonlights on all night. ;)

Moonlights all night and I agree with the low O2 concern by turning the ph's off at night. Tunzes only slow the flow at night they do not go off.

Thanks for the replies. StompTheYard, I had heard that too as well as less of a flow from the powerheads. That's why I was asking to see what people actually did.

I have actually heard that some fish freak out in total darkness and jump out. I leave my moonlight on 24/7.

The other day when I totally turned off my moon light, one clownfish jump out from the eggcrate down to the floor (surprisely she made through the eggcrate). Fortunately I heard her crying for help right away, and put her back in the tank immediately.

if you turn power heads off at night or even slow them wouldn't your PH drop?

sorry in advance if this is a rubbish question
