are the oysters you would find in a mangrove flat for example beneficial to a reef tank? ive never seen any for sale.

They would exhibit biodiversity but little much else. They eat mostly phytoplankton, something that isn't found in most tanks. They're your typical filterfeeder, and will die without supplemental feeding.

I placed four oysters in my tank about 3 weeks ago. I cooked a bushel and these were lucky enough to not get eaten. They are doing fine as of now. I keep spot feeding them Kent PhytoPlex with a turkey baster a couple times a week. Just catch them when they are open and give them a little shot. I like having them because I can feed my corals a little on the heavy side and they will help keep the water quality up. I also added five little neck clams to my tank a few days ago just to see how they would do. I figured wth..... I only paid 3.99 for a bag of them so why not try to add some cheap filters to the tank.

They don't do anything for water quality of a reef.

Nope!
But they look cool.
I have a few clams also and "if" they help out, that would be an added benefit.
