I think it looks a little like C. flavicauda

These pics are tiny, but here is a selection you can choose from. :)

what about this one, currently listed on liveaquaria's Diver's Den?
http://www.liveaquaria.com/diversden/ItemDisplay.cfm?ddid=18961&siteid=20
It's only 2 inches, so it's a juvenile, may color up differently as an adult. Have you tried looking at any of the marine atlas books?

I don't think it's that one. Off color and no stripes on his.

Maybe A. Thompsoni, A. Auranticavus, or A. Fowleri kind of looks like yours. Can't tell exactly but I think its a Thompsoni.
I vote Ctenochaetus flavicauda, too.
There is a good picture of one, World Atlas of Marine Fishes, Kuiter, Debelius; p. 672.
Also, try Google or Google Scholar, for more pics, etc. of C.

Can you get a closer shot of the mouth? Without that, it will be difficult to narrow it down very far.

i know, its a doctor tang. they are from the carribean. there are a bunch of them at Shedd's aquarium in chicago.
they get about 2 feet long. very big and robust fish.
they are easy to keep and are pigs. i have cared for one before.

The only problem with that is that I don't see the characteristic striped pattern in the pic. It may just be the pic itself, but judging from that, I doubt it is that species.

I also disagree, that ID does not take into account the white tail.
I am looking for a Ctenochaetus flavicauda. They are among the smallest tangs with a maximum length of 4-1/2 inches. Where can one be obtained? Thanks!

"I am looking for a Ctenochaetus flavicauda."
Live Aquaria has one in their divers den section for $90. Link:

yeah beautiful fish!
Thanks! I've just placed an order for a Ctenochaetus flavicauda from Drs. Foster & Smith. This is the first time that I've seen it on sale and it will be my first tang. I hope that it likes the caulerpa, hair algae, and bubble algae that has infested my 75-gallon reef aquarium. The other reef inhabitants are:
1 Maroon Clown
1 Flame Hawkfish
2 Blue Damsels
3 Pajama Cardinals
1 large brown anemone (BTA?)
1 small white anemone with purple tips (condylactis?)
Who's got a Ctenochaetus flavicauda?
Any special care instructions?
Thanks again!

It looks like I ordered the last C. flavicauda from LiveAquaria. Where did you obtain your C. flavicauda if I may ask?
