Hey everyone,

I've seen this guy hiding out inside holes in one of my rocks for weeks but could never get a good eye on him. The other night after lights out I finally caught him out and about. He's currently living in a mason jar in my sump for the time being.

He's pretty small, about 0.75"x0.5"x0.25", and very skittish. He tightens up into a little 'rock' whenever disturbed. He has short legs and can easily be mistaken for a piece of rock rubble. Colors in the photo are accurate. I figure he's not safe for the main tank being a true crab, but is he safe to set free in the fuge, or shall he live between baffles or in the skimmer section for the rest of eternity?

Thanks!

Good thing you got him out, I had one just like this but was the size of a half dollar. He ate and killed over $150 worth of fish, shrimp etc.

He is from the Mithrax Family I believe, I would keep him in the fuge.

Psaumis cavipes maybe ;). its an Xanthid crab for sure. they are usually very distructive. the sump would make a great home . http://decapoda.free.fr/illustration.php?n=1&sp=681

i think LeslieH here on RC has a friend thats looking for some crabs to do some research on. nothing wrong in donating it for science :D.
