Well I have lost one sea hare and 2 freshwater mollies in my tank since putting these seio 1500's in so just to be on the safe side of not letting fish, snails or shrimp get caught I made these screens.

Material is from a restaurant supply store. It is the rubber mat you can cut to size and put in the bottom of your kitchen sink. I just cut it into strips and wrapped it around the intake and used zip ties to secure it. Don't have to worry about detrius like you would with a sponge and this material is very tuff. I cannot notice any decrease in output but can definitely notice a wider disbursement of the intake pull of water. Not nearly as concentrated in one spot like it was..here is a pic.

Along with my new magnet holders I much more enjoy these pumps now.....no more suction cups!

Nice. How long have you been running it? I wonder how difficult it will be to clean, though a vinegar bath would most like solve it anyways.

Thanks, only a few days. I did the vinegar bath on both powerheads and they clean really nice so I don't see it being a problem. If need be I would just have to remove 2 zip ties and vinegar bath the mesh at the same time. Won't be a problem since they really get the vinegar bath every 3-4 months.

Snails used to get stuck, now they just climb all around them.:)

How much does it restrict the flow?

None. It just diverts it through all the mesh and it pulls evenly instead of right through the powerhead opening.

It is just like a screen door on the house. The screen does not restrict the flow of air it just disperses it.

Needlepointers mesh would work the same I think. It is readily available at any craft store.
