I just purchased a pair of 250w DE Phoenix 14K bulbs yesterday from Eye Candy and was curious if these bulbs will burn whiter after the burn in? Right now it seems a bit too blue for my taste and I may have to sell them so I can go back to 10K's. I'm running the bulbs on a HQI (Mag) ballast.

Thanks in advance.

How long? Are we talking a couple weeks? Months?

Thanks for the reply

I started to see a change in color about a month later. I run my 14ks for 8 hours a day. Hope this helps....

A friend just got the iwasaki 20k's and they have an amazing white color with a hint of purple and blue it looks like. With supplemental lighting those bulbs are unstoppable.

i run 3 phoenix's only with no actinics and heres a full tank shot its pretty much a true representation of what i see in person....

i run them on PFO HQI ballast

IMO they run a crisp white with a tint of blue

haha, I dunno if its just me, but that does not look anywhere near a crisp white. looks really blue to me, very comparable to 20ks. are you sure that's a true representation?

I think I'll just sell the bulbs. Thanks for everyone that replied.

I was planning to get Phoenix 14ks for my new hood, but I'll also be running two 140w VHO Actinic bulbs. Will this be way too blue?

I was planning to get Phoenix 14ks for my new hood, but I'll also be running two 140w VHO Actinic bulbs. Will this be way too blue? Iam running 2 Phoenix 14ks with 2 48" 120watt URI Super Actinic VHOs & i think the color is amazing. I got the idea from the Fragfarmer & purchased the bulbs from him. But of course the 14ks dont need any supplement. I guess it is all about taste....

I have heard that the Phoenix 14ks are bluer than some of the 20ks from other companies. I know they are too blue for my taste. You might want to try the Hamilton 14ks.

The pic of murphreef posted is definitly bluer than what the phoenix 14K looks like in person. I have run these bulbs for about 3 years. I have heard that they have the best color when used with VHO actinic but I have been too lazy to add them. I would be very interested in an Iwasaki 20K if I knew they exhisted but I have never seen a Iwasaki in the 250 watt DE format.

Good Morning to all,

A week ago, I purchased a 150w HQI 14k Phoenix bulb from Marine Depot as a replacement for my sunpod and to this day...my bulb has been burning a yellowish-white color. I need to know if this normal for all new HQI bulbs? I have heard that it takes about 100 hours after being installed to display the blueish white color. How much of this is true?
Are you all satisfied with the phoenix bulbs? The packaging of the bulb I purchased from Marine Depot was a bit fishy...no Phoenix product markings on the box. (just a plain white box with a bulb inside) Again, is this normal?

The phoenix comes in a plain white box.....Different ballasts will make the bulb different colors...

The iwasaki's i was talking about are 150 watt DE. Not sure if they make the 250 yet but they should because the 150's are fantastic.

I agree with the above statement that the color of the bulb depends on two factors, the bulb and the balast.

I run 1 14k hamilton and 1 phoenix 14k and the hamilton is much more blue.

I see, what were you trying to do confuse us by bringing up a 150 watt DE in a 250 watt DE thread!:D I agree that the Iwasaki is one of the nicer 150 watt DE bulbs but they have shown no interest in entering the 250 watt DE or SE Metal Halide market. Those Iwasakis have been available for nearly 5 years but since few reefers run 150 watt DE no one really knows about them.

well i will keep you updated cuz my friend who i just got addicted to the hobby is running 2 DE iwasaki's on a bluewave ballast. They are whiter then i was expecting although iwasaki makes a 50k bulb so it wasnt that surprising to see the 20k look like a 10k.

I apologize for any confusion. I seen phoenix bulb users as the subject and thought that I asked a valid question regarding the bulbs color temperature. Again, my apologies and I too appreciate all the feedback regarding this issue. And to add a little more TMI: Marine Depot has offered to replace the bulb if the color remains the same. I am so glad that I asked. Thanks.

Larry

Just remember that MD usually has a time limit on returns. Research this on their website.
