Anyone with more than one or two BTA splitting events care to hazard a guess as to the expected failure rate? How often do one or both halves not survive?

I've had 5 or 6 splitting events and possibly one half didn't make it. There may have been more splits in my tank but I am only counting the ones done "in public". I'm not sure how many GBTA I have in my tank as they all move to the upper back of my 180G tank.

The one half that didn't survive actually disappeared so it may have surived and moved to another part of the tank to recover or the cleanup crew could have gotten to it.

What is going on in your tank that is causing them to split?

Water parameters? Lighting? Tank mates?

Nothing I can attribute it too.

About one a month.

There is something going on then. Can you list your water parameters, and equipment?

I agree - if your BTAs are splitting and dying, there is something wrong. I have heard of occasional multi-splits where one clone dies, but I personally have never lost a recent split.

I had a GBTA and an RBTA....they've been in the tank for about six months. Both split, the rose 3 ways, and all were doing fine. One of the RBTAs just split again, and everyone seems OK. The GBTAs oddly enough are not doing well right now, not sure why...but I don't think its split-related, as they were perfectly fine for a few months afterwards.

You are all taking this thread in the wrong direction.

Surely BTA split survival rate is less than 100% because nothing is 100%. What is the expected mortaility rate? Has anyone even collected data? I have 1 in 7 and you are saying something is wrong in my tank so should the mortality rate for BTA splitting 1 in 10, 1 in 15, 1 in 20?

You said,

I've had 5 or 6 splitting events and possibly one half didn't make it.

Sorry if we're taking this thread in the wrong direction, but that doesn't sound like 1 in 7.

I haven't collected any data, but I've never lost a fresh split and I've had well over 100 splits (I've lost a few clones, but never due to a split). I've only rarely read or heard of fresh splits not making it. Sorry, I can't tell you if 1 in 7 is okay or not.

I can't find any data about this. I'll keep searching.

Ahhh, you meant one half of a particular split, not half of your splits...right? That's why people thought there was something wrong I'll bet.

Yes. It was so clear in my head...:)
