I have two tanks:

1 40g hex FOWLR I have had it running since July with a dwarf lion and goat fish..

I have a 60g reef tank with 288 watts PC lights. Only have 50lbs of live rock in it. It has been running for two months.

I have to scrape the green algae off the acrylic on my 60 every day where my 40 I have to maybe scrape it once a month. Why is this? I have a U.V sterilizer on my 40 would that make a difference? I have my lights on my reef tank about 10 hours a day is that to much? Also my reef tank stays warmer between 78-81 where my 40g stays at 76. Should I keep my reef tank cooler and run les lights?
Thanks for the help.

Extra light is probably your biggest culpret. I wouldn't turn down the lights, if its making the glass algae grow its making the coral algae grow as well. Also I wouldn't toss a UV on the reef tank permenantly, as its indescriminant and will kill good critters as it kills bad stuff.

Is this a problem that all reef tanks have then with the extra light?

What water are you using? RO?

I am not using RO/DI water, I am not having the same problem in my 40FOWLR just my 60reef.

I'm not an expert, but I don't think it's extra light. I have a 250w DE HQI on a 10 gallon nano...WAY more than I need, and I don't have this problem. However...when I first setup my tank I had the same problem you have...I was using PC bulbs then. I believe garf.org has a page dedicated algae and what is causing it.

Each tank is different and how it processes the extra nutrients.

Tap water will definitly cause algae. With 100g of water you need one anyways.

Has anyone tried the unit from melev's site? I was thinking about getting that one but can find cheaper units with dual TDS's on ebay.

Go cheaper on ebay. I did and have never regretted it.

Just my $.02.

Which ones have you found on eBay? I am also thinking of getting a unit but I don't know what is good and what isn't.

I was thinking about the D1006CT. 100gpd for $110.00 plus shipping.....then maybe just buying a hand held TDS meter.

If I'm not mistaken, the only difference between the D1006CT and the R1006C is the tank and faucet right? I could do without those and save about $25 bucks.

i was thinking abou this one on ebay for 72.99 plus shipping
Reef 100GPD Reverse Osmosis Water Filters +DI+free 5 ps

I was looking at this and there are three options for feed water hook up. Does anyone know what I would need to hook up to a standard kitchen sink?

That one is not a bad deal but the lack of 5th grade grammar and spelling skills really turns me off from that one.

What are the brand names you are looking at? I don't see the D1006ct and R1006c on ebay.

Check out soumiknight's store, Soumi Knight Systems.

Try this link. Not sure if it's tied to my userid or not though.

It wasn't tied to your user id. Those do look nice, the only thing is I just wan't to hook it up to my kitchen faucet. I don't know if you can do that with those.

Soumi Knight--that's the one I bought!

If you're resourceful you can hook it up to the faucet. All you need is to be able to use one of those fast connectors like are on the ice maker or water filter in your refrigerator, with a valve to divert the flow when you want it. Home Depot or Lowe's probably has everything you need.

But if your pipes are CPVC it's not hard to tap into the line, and the fitting you get will tap into a copper line (but I didn't do this so I don't have personal experience).

Of course, I did my own electrical work, so you may take my claims with a grain of salt. :-)
