I'd rather run this as its own thread than in its previous location...

Some info on mandarins eating roe (the tiny fish eggs on sushi):

This is more for people who need info about mandarins and not a question-

[Okay, thanks for the input]

I've just recently gotten comfortable with keeping a mandarin. They have a pretty high mortality rate due to improper feeding. They eat mostly copepods (the little 'bugs' in your tank). I've had one for almost three months and its doing swell. I had a nice sized copepod population in my 125gal which was quickly eaten by the mandarin. Needless to say I was a bit nervous. Since then I've been slacking on getting some more copepods (which you can buy pre cultured at inland aquatics, http://inlandaquatics.com/prod/products.html) which is nice. anyways I've found out that they will eat roe as well. try using small roe like smelt roe or whatnot (roe are fish eggs, the little orange balls in your sushi). I've found that a good mix of roe and copepods make for a very healthy mandarin. don't take my word on this, but I bet that one could keep more than one per tank if fed roe and lots of cultured copepods. the only problem is that the copepods are a bit expensive, try looking into culturing your own. well, it was fun stealing your spotlight bob/Lorenzo but it was about time I gave a little knowledge instead of taking it. thanks, Jon Trowbridge

My oldest SW fish is a mandarin ( 4yrs ).

He eats mysis & the small pellet formula if it makes it to the substrate. He is very healthy & fat.

We have recently added a young female hoping that he could teach her to forage like he does. Not only is that working, but they have been caught doing the mating dance.

Sounds like Stu should start a Mandarin day care, teach them all to forage, haha.

Stu - Have you not updated your profile? According to that, you've had your Mandarin longer than you've been in the hobby... :-)

Both mandarins are in my 125 Display.

I fixed my profile.

As a matter of fact, the male Mandarin was my very first fish. I had a 20 Gal tank with LR & it had just finished cycling. I added a clean up crew & Garf grunge. We had lots of bugs running around. My wife went to the LFS and asked what the perfect fish would be for such a setup. They sent her home with a mandarin - BRILLIANT!!

After reading up on it's needs ( after the purchase - DUH ) I determined that the 20 Gal was nowhere near enough. I quickly converted over my 75 Gal FW to Salt, got that tank established, and moved the mandarin. That was more than 4 years ago, and two tank moves later he is still going strong.
