I'm in the proccess now of building a new canopy for my 110 and I wanted to know if the tank itself could support the weight of a wood canopy. In my case it will contain 2-250 watt metal halide pendants (with internal ballasts) each weighing about 20 lbs a piece, as well as 4-110 watt VHO's and a couple of cooling fans. In all I estimate that it should weigh between 55 and 70 lbs. Would there be any problems with this? Any input would be great, thanks!

The tank will have no problem supporting the weight of the canopy. You however might have difficulty getting the canopy off the tank without assistance. Just make sure you have good access or a system that lets you service the tank.

Be sure to vent the canopy to help dissipate the heat.

there will be no problems. You could lay down on top of your tank and not have problems.

as long as the tank is level, that is.

Awesome, good to know. And yes it will be extremly well wented and cooled. I'm also going o run a chiller if necessary. Thanks!

you will still need to run fans because the ballasts get hot & it will heat the top of the tank

Right, I'm planning on running 2 or 4, half pushing, half pulling air.

Where did you buy the fans for the canopy?

I actually got a great deal through my company. (we do emissions controls for natural gas plants, and therefore have massive panels inside engine rooms that need to be cooled.) If these fans can cool down a computer in a 200 plus degree room, they should have no problem cooling two 250 watt MH, haha.

Just to give you an idea of these fans, they move 350 cfm of air with only 48 dbA of sound. (just as quiet as the icecap fans but they move almost 6 times as much air) :)

Be sure to make your canopy a little wider than 48" to fit your VHO bulbs + endcaps.

I made that mistake and now have to use 46.5" VHO bulbs.

I have the 46.5" bulbs too so no problems at all :)
