Well we thought we had a Mantis in our 75. So tonight after messing up my nano I made it my mission to tear apart the live rock to find the click, click, boom............

this is what we found.........this small thing sounded like someone was tapping on the glass with a hammer . mind you he or she is about almost 1/2 inch long!!! Oh and a worm about 2 1/2 feet long!! sorry no picture of that nasty creature!!!

ya he is some sort of pistol. Trying to get an id. There seems to be some 400+ species though.

Found him. Alpheus leviusculus I couldn't find much info on him (at least not in english).

From some of the comments I read it looks like he may not partner up with a goby. It is so weird how much he sounded like my mantis shrimp when i heard him. It really is incredible the way the snapping works. Here's a link if you're intrested:

Cool thanks Brian. That is him. Says minimum tank size 10 gallons. Guess my Nano will have 1 occupant.

I know you're dying to know what that German (http://www.meerwasser-lexikon.de/eng/59/1566/Alpheus/leviusculus.htm) says, so I might as well try to redeem some of my many years of education in near useless subjects...

Sex differences: The first two pairs of swimming legs are used as gonopods by the male. These sex organs are easy to recognize, because they are longer than the other swimming legs. The females have normal swimming legs. They don't change sexes.

You'll have to look up gonopod on your own... :spin3:

Interesting article on the pistol shrimp.

So what's the story on the 2 1/2 foot worm?!?!? :eek2:

No story, half of him ended up in the trash, and the other half in the fuge. I think it was a relatively harmless worm.
