View Full Version : Water Evaporation Rate?

I have a 90 gallon AGA with a wet/dry filter. I am running a Rio 2500 return pump and have a single maxiijet powerhead. I am waiting on my Seio powerheads and skimmer to come in before someone complains about my lack of water movement.
The water in my tank seems to be evaporating fairly quick. I am putting in at least a quart of water a day. The temp in the tank is a steady 79 and we keep our home on 70. The tank has a wooden hood on top and I leave my lights on for 7 hours a day when I am at home. Is this about normal with evaporation? I have checked my plumbing, wet/dry and tank for leaks. Everything is totally dry. My LFS thinks it is a little high, since I just filled a 5 gallon bucket last week at his shop and now it is empty. Any thoughts?

Not bad. I go through 2.5 to 3 gallons a day in my 125

Evaporation is good. I litteraly go through 1/2 gallon every day on just a 20 gal tank.

I have been meaning to ask this for awhile. But does the evaporation rate noticeably slow down during the summer months when the air humidity is higher? I have about a gallon a day evaporating currently, but it seems that back in October when I started my tank I wasn't losing as much water daily as I am now, and the only thing that I can think that has changed is the drier humidity level with the winter air.

Yes there are different evaporation rates between summer and winter. Most people have more evaporation during the winter when the indoor air is drier.

And a quart of water evaporation/day from a 90 gallon tank seems low, so yeah, thats normal.
