Minnows, unless your fishing for Bottle Bass.

Dan uses the same bait as he does in the summer.

Once we did that with a group of RC moderators. We tried BrianD as a bait but even the fish did not like him.

Probably doesn't make you have to go to the bathroom as much either! Can you imagine having to go every 5 minutes because you are sitting on a block of ice! And probably not a tree in site!

Mealworms or minnows. Present the bait MUCH slower than you would in the summer.

Dont forget the anti-freeze!! Schnapps works pretty well.

I think you can never go wrong with metal spoon lures. They always seem to do the trick for me... but then again, I have never been ice fishing.

I go Ice Fishing for Trout every year near Mammoth/Bridgeport Calif. Yes... the season opens the last weekend of April and we have about 2-3 weeks before the 10k elevation lakes start to unfreeze and become unsafe.

The best lures/spoons for Trout have been medium size 1/4oz Kastmasters (mfg by Acme tackle Co.) The gold w/ red anodized stripe works very well. Some people use Cyclops (I think Mepps mfg them) are pretty good also.

I've used bait, and meal worms work better than night crawlers because the Trout are a bit lethargic this time of year.

Bigger fish are usually caught w/ lures vs. bait.

Have fun!
Doug

BTW... don't forget the Jack Daniells!
