I got to do a good bit of electrofishing in college for one of my fisheries classes. We did it at night in one of the lakes near Penn State and during the day on the one stream. It's a very interesting experience as critters come out of NOWHERE and you see a lot of fish you would never think are under your feet.
It stuns everything in the water - fish, frogs, snakes, turtles, muskrats, etc. You see stuff go scampering up the banks of the streams when you stick the probe in the water. And from experience, it puts out a pretty good jolt. The boat we used for the night electrofishing on the pond wasn't exactly a high quality piece of equipment. The brand new boat that Penn State had just bought got stolen about 2 weeks before the semester started, so we were working with an old jalopy of a boat that had things held on with C-clamps. And when one of the railings shifted, my chin came in contact with it (which obviously is connected to the boat which is the conductor) and it zinged me in the chin pretty good. My jaw was chattering for a while afterwards. I'll see if I can dig up some of the pictures from when we did it...
It's frustrating because even when it's done correctly, sometimes the reaction that the fish have to the elecrical wave causes their muscles to constrict so quickly that it can break their back, especially on trout who are super sensitive to it. We had to mourn a few monster beauty trout when we did it...and you can't eat them when they're collected under a scientific permit from the state. Darn!

Did I miss the ASPCA notice saying "No animals used in the making of this film were hurt or abused"?
Just wondering.
