I'm driving myself crazy trying to determine my pump needs for my proposed basement sump. I've decided to leave it in the hands of the fluid engineers, hydraulic engineers, aquatic specialists and experienced aquarists who frequent this site.

Here's what I already know:

1. It's an 8' rise from the sump to the top of the display tank.
2. The total length of the return line will be about 14' (I prefer to keep it to 3/4" dia)
3. There will be only "device" on the return line .. that being the piece that allows the return to hang on the tank edge)
4. The skimmer mfg. suggests a 3 - 5 times flow thru the sump (I have a 125 gallon tank and 30 gallon sump)

Given the data above, how much head should I allow for?
And ... can you recommend a pump to meet the stated demand? I prefer submersible pump, but if I can't I can't.

Any help is appreciated.

Try this calculator to determine your headloss.

As far as return pumps I am a huge Eheim fan.

Thanks for the calculator link. Perfect!!

It computes 10.86 feet of head preasure. Unfortunately, an Eheim won't work for this application.

I would suggest looking at a decent pressure rated pump for that application.

I was thinking maybe a MAG12 ?
