Besides giving romaine lettuce to my tangs, I wanted to get creative on my fish food for my carnivores. I have read and heard from experienced fish aquarists they buy shrimp and mix it together with garlic and salmon oil and that even their corals like it as well. How do you all feel about garlic-- is it a true magic weapon against parasites etc..? If you wish to share you recipes that would be cool and appreciative.
Thanks

Everyone I've ever heard from swears by garlic. But I would be leery of depending on lettuce to feed reef herbivores. The nutritional profile may not be anything close to what they need for long-term health. I'd go with Sushi Nori, which is cheap and more like their natural diet, and supplement with macroalgae from your sump or refugium. They will probably also gobble up pellet or flake food if my experience is any guide.

Garlic is a natural antibiotic. I always add a lot of minced garlic to my homemade fish food. I was just at the Denver Aquarium on Friday and the zoologist there said they add garlic powder to all their fish food.

stop the romaine. I believe I have read that they cannot break down the cellulouse(sp?)
feed nori instead. Last I heard there were no romaine farms in the ocean. :)

Ditto on the nori.
As far as the garlic, we have a garlic press and whenever we use it, there is always the skin with the little bits of garlic on it left over. We put those leftovers in RO water in a tupperware in the fridge. We thaw our fish food in the garlic water.

My fish get a mixture of live oysters, live clams, scallops, shrimp, brine, mysis, cyclopeez (spelling?) all with 2-3 drops of garlic concentrate. For their greens they get canned fish flake and/or pellets. Colors are great, fish are fat.
