Its cheap so I'm sure there must be something wrong with it.

You are correct it is cheap for a reason. It is a very low quality drinking water unit at best that uses no-name Chinese or Taiwanese components. If they want to sell the mto knowledgable reef keepers they will need to advertise the name of the membrane manufacturer, use a vertical refillable DI canister and cartridge and get rid of the granular activated carbon for starters.
You will find much better units suitable for reef systems from several sponsors here on RC including:

any thoughts on that one? if its a no, i am leaning toward the purely h2o....

i'm also worried about using too much water. i have a very weak well and not a lot of pressure. If I leave a garden hose running for a half a day, I will run out of water.

Stick with the RC sponsors. The WG on e-bay is another low quality drinking water filter trying to pass off as a reef quality filter. The vendor makes some very questionable claims that border on false advertising in my view. For drinking water it might be OK but not for a reef. Again you want name brand filters in the correct and not secret micron sizes, a 75 GPD Dow Filmtec RO membrane and a vertical 24 oz standard sized canister DI filter.

That would not be my first choice as again it does not use a standard sized 10" refillable vertical DI. The throwaway cartridges are $20 a shot and 12 to 16 oz while the refillable holds 24 oz, treats much better since all resin comes into contact with the water due to its superior bottom up flow pattern and refills can be had for $6 to $8 per 24 oz refill. Longer life, better treatment and lower long term cost. Look at the Typhoon for $10 more get a handheld TDS meter to go with it. It should only be about $30 to $35 more total but cheaper to operate and better water quality.
