Where is the best place to find dolomite?

Cheers,
John

For what use ?

For magnesium maintenance in a calcium reactor. :)

I don't have a good source to recommend.

So... I just got back from my LFS and I just found out my magnesium is sky high! It's at least over 1500ppm, done 3X with a salifert kit.

I don't supplement anything at all... all I use is a calc. reactor with gen-x media (similar to schuran media... old coral skeletons). Calcium and alkalinity levels are WNL (400 calc. and 9dkh).

So, I guess I'm going to make a batch of my salt (Tropic Marin Pro) and see where that gets me. I mix up the Tropic Marin Pro with RO/DI water (currently reading 2ppm on TDS meter).

I guess I don't need to supplement after all, but I would like to figure out where all this magnesium is coming from and I might grab some dolomite when and if I am able to lower the mag concentration in my tank.

I know you don't mention the toxicity of high mag levels in your article Dr. Holmes-Farley, but does anybody have any idea what this might be doing to my corals.

Peace,
John H.

Ok, so I mixed up a new batch of water with the Tropic Marin Pro-Reef salt.

The magnesium tested out around 1890ppm with salifert kit. This is of course much higher than NSW concentrations.

Every gallon of tank water was made with the Tropic Marin Pro-Reef salt. I've been using it for roughly a year and a half. I only do 10 gallon water changes every month.

My tank has done allright, but corals are always much lighter once they get into my tank. They grow extremely slowly (corals and coralline algae). I would say the colors look washed out for the most part on most of my corals. I just use one 250W 14K Hamilton SE bulb with no actinic supplementation.

I'm not sure if this is due to the high magnesium or not... but 1890ppm is substantially higher than the the recommended 1250-1350ppm.

Hmmmmm... Well, looks like I'll have to do some rigorous water changes. I just purchased a new bucket of the Tropic Marin regular salt mix so hopefully, I'll be able to bring down the magnesium over time. Does anybody know of anything that chelates magnesium.... other than using a bunch of kalkwasser.

Peace,
John H.

I know you tested it 3 times BUT. Take the kit to the LFS and test their Mg ++ and see if they have another kit to test it against. I think you have a testing error, maybe the kit.

Here some mag media's

Hey Boomer,

It wasn't my test kit, it was the LFS's kit and it's been used to test water from other people's tank.

I'm the only one who has tested out of the range of one titration. They had to refill the syringe to continue titrating up to 1890ppm.

Most of the time they test WNL or lower Mag levels. I trust their test kit since it has been used on other tank water with normal results. I really think it is the tropic marin pro reef salt.

I've ordered another salifert magnesium test kit. I'll make another batch of the salt as well as a batch of the tropic marin regular salt mix and compare levels.

Thanks for all of the input!

Cheers,
John H.

If your still looking try a gardening supply store. Dolumite is typically brite white.

That is limestone that is bright white **sometimes**. Dolomite is grayish to buff **usaually**

Ok John :D
