I can't find anywhere that sells the Helios bulbs other than ebay. I was looking at the 400w 20k

Anyone know who sells them?

I always see these described as HQI mogul bulbs. Are they SE designed to be run on an HQI ballast?

I was wondering the same as schanz. Are they true 'HQI' rated bulbs, or can they be run on M58 and M59 ballasts?

from what ive seen over at upscales.. they HAD 250w SE helios 20k's over their frag tank. and they fired, but the color were kinda eh.. kinda like a radium. but they did fire on a m58 mag ballast.

now they have them running on HQI ballasts, and the color is much much better.

to get an idea, go to www.upscales.com and click their frags page. all those pics are under the 250w SE helios 20k with no supps.

then click the frag of the oregon tort, thats their cube under 4x400w helios, and 2xradiums. SE bulbs on HQI PFO ballasts

btw.. the tank on their front page is their old show tank that is NOT their cube.. those are 14k hammies and vho's

Okay, so that means that the 250wattSE is not HQI rated, as a true HQI bulb / pulse start wouldnt fire on a probe start ballast.
That leaves the 400wattSE up for question still though, but I suspect its a probe start bulb as well. Most every US bulb is.

That does remind me... 250wattSE Radiums are HQI rated... 270 watt rated actually. Maybe they are an option.

I've been eyeing the Helios 250 watt lamps as well. For those of you that have used them and Radium lamps on PFO HQI's how would you compare the similarities and/or differences?

been running the units on a PFO hqi ballast verse the M58 where with a par meter did get more light and better color

Something some of you might consider is to use the EVC bulbs instead, esp the 250watters. On all the bulbs Sanjay has tested, the Helios, EVC and Sn Aquatics bulbs of the same spec have identical spectrums and outputs... varying by one or two points here or there with the 250s (perhaps more a function of time or even bulb variation within the mfg, but the bulbs are too close to be accidental). I would suspect that they are the same bulbs... rebadged for individual sales.

Hey thanks for that. What's the best source for EVC lamps?

Just got a response from Phil at Xenia USA...

He says that all the Giesemann 400wattSE bulbs are in fact HQI rated. He was even trying to explain to me how to check a bulb's internals visually and all to see for myself (so I will assume he knows what Im talking about, not just pulling names out of thin air). So add Giesemann 400 watt SE bulbs to the small list of HQI rated 400wattSE bulbs. Ushio/BLV nepturion 10,000K, 14,000K, 20,000K... Aquaconnect 14,000K, and Aqualine 10,000K.

Radium lamps are HQI rated too aren't they?

hahnmeister
02/11/2007, 06:51 AM
No, only the 250wattSEs are. The '400's are really not even 400's, let alone HQI. They are really 360watt bulbs. Thats why they are so short-lived.
