I bought a sump to go with my tank but i keep seeing really nice peices of live rock and buying them and im now stating to think i want a little bit of coral. My question is that if i keep adding live rock and fill up the tank will i have wasted my money on the sump or is it still a useful part of the system???

Not really an either/or situation. The sump is still useful, as in you can put your equipment down there ie. skimmer, heater, ca reactor/kalk/limewater, ATO etc, etc. and you could also make it a refugium.

I usually go with the LR first until you have enough, usually 1-1.5 lbs per gallon, to provide biological filtration. The sump really helps circulation and total water volumn but can be added somewhat latter.
