Ive heard mixed ideas, im curious to hear some opinions on whats better filtration shall i say, better to use a sump or a canister filter?

The two are really apples and oranges. A sump just adds more water volume to the tank and it's a good place to hide your heaters and chemical filtration etc.. Canisters are plagued with probs. I'd do the sump and baffle a fuge in it where you can grow some macro.

I'd go with a sump and a good skimmer if you don't already have one.

Go with the sump. The cannister filter isn't going to be all that useful.

Thanks for the help, i was also told to up the water flow, I have a 55 gallon tank - and i was thinking of going with a 20 gallon long sump - what size pump to i have to use for the return, and waht size water flow pump should i have in my tank???

I have a 50b and i love my ehiem 1262. this pump is super quiet and pushes up 900gph. as for flow in the tank i'd go with a couple of powerheads.
