refugiam - how big?

How big does a refugium have to be to have a positive effect on a reef tank? Should it be in its own tank and plumbed into the sump? I am building a 4x2x2 with the sump in the basement. Thank you.

I've heard total sump/fuge volume should be 15-20% the display volume at minimum. Just remember, the solution to polution is dilution. The more circulating water volume, the better. The down side though, is it's much more expensive to supplement and do water changes.
