I would like to hear some people's stories and experiences with sps under t5 or vho.

I have a 50g (48in long) that I am needing to light and I am leaning towards t5s or vhos

I can get probaly four tubes of t5 under it. What could I light

Also I am getting a 90g. Can I light it with t5 and have sps?

I personaly have never tried it, but if you look at the tank of the month it would appear that you can. He has a ton of sps and all he has are t-5's running it.

I ahd a cap under VHOS with no problem and my LFS has there show tank run with jus VHO with no problem, Id imagine keep it towards the top and your good for the less demanding SPS. I just got a few frags and am only running metal halides for 3 hrs a day and VHO all day so Ill let you know in a while how they look.

i have a 48" 60g with 4x54w T-5's. I have been able to keep just about every sps I've tried; monti's, assorted acros, etc. i've only lost 2 of the 10 or so and im 90% sure it was due to flow issues not lighting. My recommendation for bulbs would be 3x 12k ATI and one blue plus. I just got those for xmas and they look amazing. i use the tek light fixture. HTH

Which tank of the month are you talking about? The tank of the month now uses 400mh and vhos

I can keep anything with 400 watts of VHO over my 75. The lights are very close to the water and more demanding sps are near the surface. I do keep clams on my sand bed. And to think they said i needed metal halide...

If you're making the choice now, go with T5s. Theyre about 3 times as efficient as VHO. Less electricity, less heat, more light.

I would go with t5's and vho combination. The t5's put out a lot of light but theres nothing like the actinic from vho's.

I have 550 watts of vho over my 75 gal. SPS corals have beautiful coloration and better growth than when I had 250w DE halides. Of course that was my dumb mistake putting that much light over such a shallow tank.
Anyway............yes you can use vho's with good results. Do a search on member "pi" his is all VHO and is simply gorgeous.

What do you guys think about pc's? I'm running 2 96w pc's in a 40g 18hx36L. One 96w 10k and the other 96w blue atinics.

I have a 58 with 576 watts VHO 8" off the surface. I can keep pretty much anything. Tank is full of thriving SPS.

Should be good to keep some lower light sps and clams near the surface. Pretty much anything else anywhere in the tank. I have no first hand experience though...
