I have a Red Sea Vase light over a small hang-on-back filter that grows cheato pretty well and it's something like 6w, 6500k light. So yes if it's the right color spectrum and the chateo is growing in a small area right next to the light. Is that your situation?

If you are only growing a baseball size it might work... otherwise I don't think it will cut it.

Like leeweber85 said, it would be OK for a small clump growing in a HOB fuge.

Hey Alizarin
Bell if your growing it in a fuge say 20 or 30g try the Invision 27w 5500k full spectrum It works well for me.

It is only 19 watts but it is equivalent to a 75 watt bulb. I have been recommended this particular set-up by many and have been told that it does an incredible job.

You can get the entire set-up at HD for about $17-$19 the bulb is a 5500k

I second (3rd) the compact flourescent approach if it's a bigger fuge...cheap and works great.

Hi 2swift, small world =)

Well, I have cheato under three different lighting conditions right now. ..

I have a small tank that the ballast went out in over 4 months ago and my cheato is still alive but not growing. There is nothing in that tank right now except some live rock and sand.

In my sump is have some 15 watt florescents from a FW tank over the cheato and it grows a little.

In the display I have a ball that grows like crazy under metal hallides. Same water as the sump but much more lighting.

So I guess my point is that it will live in just about any light but growth does seem to increase with more lighting.

So 6 watts should keep it alive and depending on available nutrients it may also grow a little.

How is that for an answer:)

I had a tiny HOB refugium on my old 30g (modded AquaClear filter) with a 13W 4100K compact fluorescent desk lamp over it. The chaeto grew well and kept nutrients down, but it's nothing compared to the growth I see now using 2x40W PC (40W 6500K, 40W 10000K) over my 30g sump. If you can provide more light it should grow faster and remove more nutrients, but it will probably be fine with the 6W light for now.

put it this way. I have two 60w grow lights on my chaeto and its doing great but I know it would be doing even better under more.

wow.. that is a lot of posts.. thanks guys.. i have baseball size of chaeto but i think it's not doing well.. i'll post some pictures today.

may be the problem is that the light is too high (13-15 inch) from chaeto.

and how many hours do i have to keep the light on?

13-15 inches is way too high for only 6w and you should keep your lights on about 12hours (designed to turn on when your display lights shut off and then shut off when the display lights come on) will help maintain ph
