I want to upgrade from the current HOB Filter that I am running and I don't know which filter would be the best. I can't go with a wet/dry or sump. Too many small children would cause problems with a wet/dry! What filter would anyone recommend and how many on a 55 gallon? I was looking at the AquaClear's because I have read good things about them. But then I wonder about a canister also. Right now I have the Penguin 350. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

I really like my marineland magnum. They make a HOT and reg. I run chemipure in mine.

I have the AC 500 on my 120gal and 65 gal and like the flow it gives! I turn it into a mini refugium and add carbon in the AC 500 if needed. Lot cheaper to buy!

I have a Fluval 404 on my 55g. No sponges just carbon, LR rubble, and some phos media. I like it and it add some nice flow to the tank. If you get one you will need to clean it out every couple of weeks due to detritus back-up.

Thanks everyone for your replies! Does everyone have a skimmer on their tank or has anyone used the surface skimmer with any of their canisters.

I'm running Eheim 2026 ProII. I removed all media, replaced them with small Live Rock with carbon pad on top. Working good for now.
