would this work???
I am considering buying myself a royal gramma (gramma loreto) for my 29g. My lfs has two for $150 each (not sure whether it a bargain or not). My tank currently has a coral beauty (centropyge bispinosus), barred goby (amblygobius phalaena), blood shrimp (lysmata debelius), cleaner shrimp (lysmata amboinesis) and various snails etc.
Would it go? Any special requirements? Any other info would be greatful. Thanks in advance Mike

IMO, the royal is a pretty standard fish, with no actual special requirements.
$150 seems a bit much, but I did notice you are in New Zealand and am really unsure of the cost of items there. I copied this from liveaquaria.com "The most coveted of the basslets, the Royal Gramma Basslet or Fairy Basslet is beautiful. The front half of its body and head are a bright purple to violet, while the back half is a striking and vibrant yellow. It is an excellent choice for a reef aquarium, and since it remains small, is perfect for small reef systems. A single specimen should be housed in a minimum of a 30 gallon tank. They are aggressive towards their own species, and should be housed singly. Because the Royal Gramma Basslet is a deep-water dweller, it prefers caves and extensive rockwork, as well as a somewhat subdued lighting arrangement. As a carnivore, the Royal Gramma Basslet will do well on a diet of meaty fare including marine fish, crustacean flesh, mysid shrimp, and quality frozen preparations. "

Even still, $105USD is a ton of cash for a Royal Gramma.
Aren't you close to Aus and the other islands? Can't you find a better deal or a "cool" fish for cheaper? |

It was a freshwater forum, but it might be similar. A fish I could get over here for $5 at the same size was $100 USD over in Australia.. and all the other fish were rediculously priced for them too.. I think it's just expensive over there, but I dunno if it was like that everywhere or what, I've never been there or really cared to research it before.

The reasons for the high prices over here is because of the biosecurity procedures. To be an importer over here can cost quite alot of money.
There is also the fact that New Zealand is an isolated country and there is a very small market in NZ. (No more than about 500 tanks in NZ, most of them FO or softie tanks). The lfs can afford to put their prices up because someone who need a fish would be bound to pay for it. I also just found out today that my lfs is getting a blackcap basslet. they want $219 NZD ($155 USD) Mike

Regardless of price, your tank 29 gallon tank would not be able to supply enough territorial space for two specimens. One would be fine though.
