I'd like to see it covered in snow. Just so we can have a December picture.
Do you brush or scrape the glass clean so the livestock can still get light? How often do you feed under these circumstances? How many days this time of year are pure cloud cover, so that it remains pretty dark all day long? Or is there enough sun to melt away anything on the glass?

Hi Melev! The Ice formation only occurs during the night from 02h00 to 08h00, only at this time the temperature drops to 0ºC, and it's not every day, probably 2 or 3 weeks a year, not more. As I told before, at this time of the year, I have to cover the top glass with isolating material so that the temperature maintains constant with no extra costs associated, there for I don't have any ice formation, for this to happen the cover temperature should not be above 0ºC, and has you know I have 25ºC inside the tank, some heat escapes there for I will never have ice in the top of the tank... I wish it happen; it was a sign that the tank was so isolated from the environment that no heat was lost. Regards Vitor Pestana |

So you cover it each night, and still get plenty of sunlight each day? I was wondering how the day to day maintenance is handled. I've never been to Portugal, and don't know what your weather is like.

Amazing setup!
I would have guessed it was always sunny and warm in Portugal with you having an outdoor tank like this. I am amazed at everything you have done with it, great job! C

Hi guys!
Sorry for the delay but i've been very busy lately. Quote:
I only cover the tank at night, just before i go to work i remove the cover. At this time of the year the sun rises around 07h30 and sets around 18h00, i have almost 12 hours of light a day. The maintenance is the same trough out the rest of the year, except for the rainy days. I left you a pic and a video where it's video where it's rainig Hail: Regards Vitor Pestana Quote:
Portugal have seasons but not so "aggressive" as in others parts of the world. If you check out the world map, Portugal is between Morocco and England, there for the weather is temperate. Regards Vitor Pestana |

G'day Vitor,
Would it be worth rigging up a cover that swings out of the road during the day, and can be easliy swung back over the tank at night, or if the hail were to be big. It could double up as shade for viewing your tank on a hot day. Cheers Chris |

Except it's a hell of a lot warmer in Portugal than the UK!
Lisboa (13º/16ºC) Porto (9º/14ºC) Funchal (15º/19ºC) Compared to : Belfast 4 °C, Cardiff 10 °C, Edinburgh 7 °C, London 9 °C And Ireland.. ha ha ha : Extremely windy or stormy... gale force... gusting 100 to 150 km/h... Rain turning showery this evening also, with some heavy thundery showers... hail, sleet and snow...zero to plus 3 C. (That's why we invented hot-whiskey) Vitor, hope spring comes soon, I cannot wait to see how much your coral's have grown over the winter months. Is it at all possible to get any shots at this time - no hassle though, I just find this setup facinating, and I need another fix... regards Conor, brrrr.... |
