Favorite way to wash sand?

As I was washing my sand this evening my mom walked by and said "What the hell are you doing with my wok?"

I found over time that the easiest way to wash my sand is to put it in the wok, tilt it a bit, and let water run in and out at its own pace and just mix (works easier having it proped at an angle in the sink)

Anyone find other strange/easy ways?

To get rid of the dirt or really fine particlles that will cause a sand storm.

I put mine in my tank , stirred it up and then siphoned it 3 times to stop my storm. not all 55 gallons but liek 5 or 6.

i just would go into the bathroom, hop on the edge of the tub, pour a good amt. of the sand into this huge nacho tupperware/rubbermaid bowl we have and pour the water into it and just mix it around with my hands and let the dirty water pour out. Worked pretty well for me.

Just make sure you run a lot of water while cleaning the sand in your tub. If you let the sand settle, you may have a clog tub. :P I suggest you do it outside if possible.

Easiest way to prevent a sandstorm is to put in the sand before adding water, then add the water slowly into a bowl or onto a plate so that it flows gently into the sand. Doing that, you can get away with no storm at all.

I don't wash my sand. I put it in the tank, then add water into a bowl or small bucket. This prevents the sand from getting stirred up. Then once the tank is full, I use a fish net to get rid of any sticks and stuff that float up out of the sand. If you wash/rinse sand too much, you will get rid of the finest particles which are great for bacteria to populate. The more fine particles you have, the larger surface area you will have for beneficial bateria to grow.

put the sand in an old pillow case, then run water through it.

I put it in the tank, then drained and filled the entire tank 8 times, stirring well before and during each draining.
I didnt plan to wash it, but after a week and a half it didn't seem to be settling out on its own.
