converting some live rock to freshwater
I am downsizing one of my saltwater tanks and wanted to use some of the interesting shapes of live rock in a freshwater African tank. I was not sure how to prepare the rock and get rid of some of the coraline, etc to prepare it for freshwater (pH=8.0) Malawi tank. Anyone done this successfully? I know I will have to go through the cycling process but first I wanted to clean and possible bleach the rock before even starting a freshwater cycling process.

Sell it , buy the right kind of rock for the chiclid tank, and use the extra money to stock the tank.

LR's too expensive to do something like that. Look around for some dry rock or dead rock if you're just going to kill it off anyway.

Unless you are attached to the rock for some reason, I'd sell it for $2-$3 a pound. That's 50% off what stores around here sell it for. Depending on how much rock you have that's quite a bit of extra cash.
If for some reason you just can't find it in yourself to get rid of it, I'd set it out to dry and then scrub the hell out of it with something abrasive. Then you could boil it to remove even more gunk and stuff that has died off. I try to prevent bleaching stuff like rocks. Call me paranoid if you will. |
