Overflow Barrier.

I'm building a glass tank and would like to incorporate those black plastic corner structures with the comb teeth for the overflows.

Does anyone know if that material can be bought anywhere? I'd rather not have to make it.

Since you're in the DIY forum and considering that you could purchase 2 pieces of glass (beveled on all edges) for just over $20.00 why look for WAY overpriced boxes when you can silicone some glass in the corner of your tank?

A tube of silicone is cheaper than dirt, glass is NOT expensive, bulkhead fittings are NOT that expensive www.thefilterguys.biz, and diamond hole saws are almost as cheap as the silicone! Even including he cost of shipping from China www.richontools.com

A MUCH better overflow can be had for a fraction of the price as listed in the links above with approx the same amount of labor as it would take to install a prefabricated box.

Thanks for the links guys.

Those bulkhead boxes are intriguing. Anyone used one of them? What's the noise like? They have a nice video but then play noxious music over it all.

RandyStacyE; (hideous avatar) Yes probably a good idea. I was a bit floored by the prices.

So you're advocating what? Holes thru the tank bottom with stand pipes and inverted elbows (sound remediation) ?

Two pieces of glass one from the back one from the side siliconed at the junction?

I really need my overflows to be fully on the sides and the returns on the sides too since I will have zero access to the rear of the tank (ever).

I was thinking 2/3s of the side,(of a 24" deep), being a box I could make out of plexy and bulkhead on thru the side. And the return coming in the front 1/3 of the side. Same with the closed system.

Thoughts?

Here's a link to the overflow I made recently.

I plumbed through the back of the tank.

I'm having a difficult time seeing the 'way overpriced' concerning the premade overflow box kits. Using the vendors indicated, Grainger, Filterguys, etc, I come up with $13 for the 1.5" bulkheads, $16.14 for the banjo bulkheads, $20 for the glass, say $3 for aquarium grade silicone, $10.70 for the drill bits, guess $10 for the durso fittings, $5 for the paint comes to $78.70 * shipping. The glass-holes 1500 kit with the drill bits, box, street elbows, and 2)1.5" bulkheads is $65 shipped.

It really isn't much, if any more expensive to buy overflows from some of these vendors. I'd do the math, but superbuzz already did it.

I had no problem with the "box price" Seems very reasonable. It was the $274 for two for the corner structures that had me doing the fish outta water gasping.

RandyStacyE; Thanks for the link. I love your tight dursos!! Really nice.

I see what you're saying, but I used use 4 bulkhead fittings and 2 different hole saw sized for mine though. Only two of the 1-1/2" bulkheads are for drainage (for Dursos). One of the smaller bulkheads will be fore gravity feeding stuff and the fourth one was just for the heck of it since I already have the hole saw.

The 1500 kit is $65.00 and has a total of 16.25” inches of overflow (which is good). Mine just has 15-1/2” per piece of glass.

For $65.00 you get only one overflow box … for the DIY $59.00 you get a total of 31” of overflow (both overflows combined).

$9.00 for the hole saw
$13.00 for 2 (1-1/2” bulkheads)
$20.00 - $23.00 for 2 pieces of glass
Approx $5.00 for the paint
Approx $3.00 for the silicone
Approx $6.00 for the Dursos

This is why I figured that they were just overpriced considering the only original item there was the box itself. The kit = $4.00 per inch of overflow in comparison to a approx $1.90 per inch for a DIY. That’s the math.

Fudge around the numbers a little considering local price differences and it’s still similar. Yes the kit is cool, but ya sure can’t compare the combined price of 2 kits … that’s why I felt that they were overpriced ‘in comparison’.

Isn't it alot easier and cheaper to just make them out of plexi glass?

Btw RandyStacyE, your avatar freaks me out! I was looking at paranormal vids on youtube earlier and then I see your avatar. Brings back memories...
