Let it FLOOOOWWWW
So in looking at PH's for the 75 I am setting up in May I am thinking that a Koralia 1 and 2 along with the Eheim 2215 should be fine for flow this will give me over 1100 GPH flow rate in the tank. Does this sound sufficient for a 75 or should I just go with 2 Koralia 2's and the Eheim?

really depends on what you want to keep. 1100gph isnt very much for a 75g. only 15x. your probably going to want at least two K2s in there at minimum

There will be a blue tang a copperband butterfly and some clowns and anemone and some other assorted corals. About 75-100 lbs of liverock. Snails and crabs also. Also a brittle star and sand sifter.

i would not put a tang in 75 gallon tank, especially with 100 lbs of rock in it...
just my 2 cents. tangs need a lot of room to swim... |

I've got 2 #2 Koralias in my 29 and its great for that size tank with open rock structure that spans most of the length of the tank. No problems with sand dredging like my PHs did. Given that, 1s and 2s may be a bit light for a 75. What do you plan to keep for corals, if any?

I would go with the k4's in a 75

the higher flow should be fine for what you plan to keep. Just make sure the Euphylia (frogspawn) isn't getting blown around too much.

I would only use a koralia in a 75 for spot flow. You want a powerhead with much more controll especially if this is your first reef tank. A powerhead with a flow control knob and duckbill tip for dirrection control. Besides these are great for water changing as you can attatch a tube and drain and fill alot easier.
Proper flow is very important and the ill effects of low flow take time to show its effects.

I have 3x hk2 and 1 maxijet900 in my 75g, with about 400gph on my return pump after headloss. Im getting approx 32x tank volume in flow, with a good distribution.

not for nothing, and I'm not a member of the tang police, but the idea of buying a fish to return it and rebuy another one oft he same is kind of lame, dont you think? if you cant care for an animal it's whole life, dont try. my 2 cents.

I'd aim for 25x turnover, maybe a bit more. I'm using two Tunze NanoStream 6045s on my 90g and love them -- combined with the return from the sump (~500-600gph) these two tiny pumps are providing all the flow I need (30x+) and they're very small. Tunzes have wide nozzles so that nothing gets blasted with direct flow, and aiming the two slightly upwards and towards each other & the front glass gives my tank loads of random flow.
I agree with the others about the hippo tang, it's not going to be happy in a 75g. How old are your kids? I have a 2" south seas damsel that's forever being called Dory -- little kids see blue and yellow and think Dory, if they're young enough it really doesn't need to be a tang to satisfy them

Ah, too bad then. Any way that 75g can be upgraded to a longer tank? A hippo is likely to be quite stressed living in a 48" tank, even as a baby. They're much more of an open-water fish than most typical fish in the hobby, and tend to succumb to ich or HLLE if they're under stress. I'm not trying to upset you or judge you, just offer some advice so you and your family will have a positive experience.

I would go with the k4s. and go ahead and get a "Dori" if you want to.
I don't think its irresponsible to own a fish that you know you will have to return one day.... its a rent-a-fish. I mean come on how many TOTM have sailfin tangs in them? do you know how large a tank has to be to happily hold an adult sailfin? know how big they get?
