NANO FISH- which are the "best" and most "colorful"

clowns,
orchid dottybacks
yellow watchman
firefish

those are the one's i'm coming up with for my 24 but i know i'm missing something that is eyepoppingly beautiful.

what is your favorite nano fish?

any yellow or red nano fish? (apart from the yellow watchman and firefish)

There are some very cool gobies. I would try a shrimp goby/pistol shrimp combo. It is a very cool symbiosis to watch. I would add them first though because they are kind of timid. Let them get very settled in before you put anything else in.

Flame Angel

I went with a Flame Angel because I already had a blue fish.

I dig the flame angel too. Something that also has some great colors and great personality I'd go with a midas blenny for yellow.

Tailspot blenny

Flame angels and midas blennies are pretty cool too. But keep in mind that many have had flames nip at corals in the past. Also, both of these are too big for your normal "nano" tank IMO. 30g+ for both of them (maybe 20g for the blenny)

I had a Higfhfin Perchlet/Geometric Pygmy Hawk in my 24 cube and he was very bright and beautiful. Stayed on the bottom half of the tank, mostly on the sandbed. I would not recomend it in a tank with timid bottom dwelling gobies and smaller shrimp, though.

Stonogobiops nematodes.
Locally known as raspberry, teacake, and poundcake.

They are cryptic [hiders] if something large and possibly carnivorous is in the area; but if assured its safe, they're out and looking for a handout. They're gobies.

Getting a tiger shrimp for a yellow watchman makes a hoot of a pair.

ALso worth looking at: the tangaroa and yashia gobies, a lot like raspberry and co., but differently colored.

Do not get a wrasse if you want to see the best of these fish.

They will, however, hang about with pearly jawfish, dartfish [firefish: of which you should only have one: they'll kill rivals], chromis [again, only one]; other gobies; tailspot blenny, most small blennies. May or may not tolerate percula clowns; probably not maroons, but a maroon is too big for your tank; do not come out much with a wrasse in the area. Personally, I advise against the dottyback---very aggressive, related to the wolf eel, appetite and attitude to match. And I've lost 2 small gobies to an allegedly peaceful flasher wrasse.

You can never go wrong with the good ol' Royal Gramma or Black Cap Basslet

What I wish was reef safe though would be the Red Coris Wrasse, absolutely stunning fish..Now I have to get a FOWLR, by far in my opinion the most beautiful SW fish, in person the colors are simply UNREAL

Blackcap Basslett:

The Catalina Goby will not live long in waters above 72 degrees, not a good choice.

Blue Spot Jawfish do not do well in captivity (again due to temps or not eating prepared foods)

The McKosker Flasher is one of the more aggressive wrasses, I would worry about it beating up the firefish.

pistol shrimp are no longer welcome here, they steal way too much!

flame angel, i just got rid of a fantastic flame because i was told they dont do all that well in a nano.

fu-manchu - i just got rid of one of them too because he's the reason i'm searching for an orchid dottyback again.

Hrm, I keep a close eye on my flame. Hasn't picked at my clam/corals, and doesn't seem to be stressed. He eats and can always find him grazing on my live rock. It's difficult to get him on the camera though, he's very shy.

The canary blenny is a beautiful bright yellow fish, small too. I've seen it listed as venomous in the literature, but the online vendors never alert you that it is dangerous. I'm going to do some research before I go out and buy me something that might kill me. LOL

Flames are awesome. I have one too.

Another red option is a yasha goby:

For yellow I would go with a yellow gumdrop goby (as long as you're not keeping acropora because they eat it):

Wow, you have one? You wouldn't happen to have a picture? Do they look even better in person?
