algae problems (not brown this time)

75 gallon has been setup for about 2 weeks now with about 60lbs of live rock + live sand from an established tank. Anyways, there is some greenish long almost slimy looking algae that seems to be growing way too quick, and is kind of growing over the purple algae in the tank. I am going to test the water tomorrow, but last time I checked the calcium was around 320 and the ph is now at 8.4. Any suggestions? The tank right now only has 5 turbo snails, 2 of which I have no idea how they got there.

just part of the new tank cycling out it will not be the last unwanted grow you see before the tank matures.

If the algae has some actual structure, removing it might be appropriate, since macroalgae can become pests. If it's just a slimy film, then it can be ignored. Either way, I agree that algal blooms are common at this point in setting up a tank.

I could be wrong but it almost kinda sounds like hair algae. Either way keep up with the water changes and regular maintanence and it will go away in time. Just a normal part of a new tank.

Should I do water changes to a still cycling tank, or just add some extra water to top it off because I've got about an inch of evaporation since the tank was setup.

Well, topping off with fresh water is definitely a good idea. Some water changes might help a bit, but they're definitely optional.

I have to same problem and it's going away. I've had my tank setup for 4 weeks.

Just cut back on lighting if you're running any at all, top off daily, and do an inital 30 - 50% water change then 20% water changes weekly and it will slowly die....you may also buy a phosbane reactor and place carbon in it...this will starve the hair algae.
