Do you have a sump with fuge? This I would do first, I would say you need 4 powerheads. Position the 2 powerheads behind the rocks, 2 on the sides, I like the Maxi Jet

If money's not a consideration, forget power heads and create a huge closed loop system. If you're unable to do that, I'd suggest 2 or 3 Koralia #4s.

Vortec or tunze stream pumps would be the best. I would also get a tunze wavebox.
But this is only needed if you are setting up a reef with SPS. If you don't want SPS then 2 vortec pumps is all you need. |

The Korilias are fantastic... I have a 125 4x2x2... Running 2 #3's and 2 #2's.. Plenty of Movement with the Filtration pump working... I have almost 4000 GPH Movement....

I would look into the Tunze product lines. I have had for about a year and they are great and can move a lot of water....

Worked great for random flow!!! |

Without regarding cost, I would go with 2 vortech MP40Ws.

Never had a problem with maxis, I think they deserve consideration irrespective of price.

And your experiance with these is what???? I have 2 ones and for breaking up my seio they work great. Their flow is very dispersed so don't expect a tornado, but they can move alot of water.

With money as no problem I wouldn't have any powerheads. A four way Oceans Motions on a closed loop and another on the return from the sump. I do use Maxi jets and no probs after 1.5 years.

20 to 30 times turnover would be a good place to start. Try to eliminate dead spots whether it be by rock placement, powerhead placement, or coral placement. Don't count the sump return as part of your tank turnover.

I run 2 koralia 3's and 1 tunze, plus a Mag 5 return line on my 125 gallon.

a Mag 5 for your return on a 125 gallon? I think you need a bigger return, you need 1250gph on a 125, I would probably look into a Mag 18 because you have to add Head loss, etc.

If I were to keep SPS, I would use a Mag 18. I like to utilize the method that is most effective for me. The Mag 18 would not match the overflow box that I am using. Thank you for the suggestion. Do you speak from experience or from something you heard. I don't mean to bash but everything on this sight has to be taken with a grain of salt. Consider the source and experience, not the number of posts.

but the flow through the sump should only be 5-10 times the total water column and or match the output of the skimmer in gph. this will ensure that partly skimmed water is not returned to the tank. check your skimmer out put --the mag5 might be ok

I'm running a mag3600 and would not do it again---they are noisy and go through alot of wattage for the gph that they deliver. There are many more energy effecient pumps on the market.
