Question sps "flat" growth pattern

Some of the new acro frags develope an unusual growth pattern after I put them in my aquarium. Instead of continuing a branching growth they begin to grow in a flat encrusting manner. Not all of them do this and their growth is reasonable and healthy. All of the water parameters are well in accepted ranges. Is this the result of too much or too little light or water flow? Or is there something else? I am not concerned, just curious.

It's neither too much nor too little flow, it's just different. You can put different frags of the same coral in different places and they'll exhibit different growth patterns. Most of my frags need to lay down a good base before they start branching up or outward, but flow does influence what they do. It's all good if they're growing.

I've heard more flow can cause certain corals to do this. Nothing wrong with it. They will eventually start growing vertically.

It sounds to me like your corals are just "basing out" before they put on vertical growth. This is a normal part of the growth process. The coral needs to secure a strong base before it can grow up or it will not be able to support itself. Some corals will put out more of a base than others before they start putting on vertical growth.
