white stringy things coming out of open brain

i just came home from class and saw that my green open brain appeared to have these white stringy things coming out of the mouths of the coral. what is this? i also have a fungia and a cycloceris but neither are doing this and look fine. the brain is kinda shriveled up but it still has its color and meat. i also noticed that some of the mushrooms i have are doing this as well. with the mushrooms it appears to be coming from the mouth and the disk area around the mouth. what causes this? is it harmful? can i do anything to help? thanks.

Many times, the release of mesenterial filaments is aggression. But sometimes corals will do this if something is wrong in the aquarium. Maybe a coral recently died, and released a toxin. Or water too warm.

I usually see them when the lights are off. I've had some Echinophyllia, Oxypora, and Acanthastrea echinata all fighting at night. It ends up being messy the next day for the looser.

I just received a coral (Echinophyllia) that was doing this (maybe unhappy with old tank params)...is recovery possible? My params are fine.

no...mine was much thinner...almost like phlegm. The coral turned the corner now and is doing much, much better!
