The males are the ones with the eggs/fry in their mouth. Seriously.

According to one of the researchers working with them, he says there is no sexual dimorphism between males and females. Lots of people will tell you that a male has a longer banner fin or a different shape to their jaw line. But unless the male has been brooding recently his jaw line will look exactly like a female's jaw line. If you are lucky enough to find one with a large shape to it's jaw line, you can hope that it is a male that has brooded recently.

This is a frequently asked question, so a search in this forum will yield lots of results. Just keep in mind there is a lot of opinion and little fact. Use a critical mind when reading...

So...

If I want to buy 2 from my lfs, just get one larger? 2 the same size? Are they like clowns in that one becomes the female and grows larger?

Banggai's don't change sex like clownfish. If your LFS happens to have several Banggai's, see if you can find two that stay somewhat close to each other. If your not sure, and you buy two, be ready to remove one should they start fighting.

If you to form a breeding pair...

1) Buy a minimum of (6) and place them all in the same tank.

2) Watch them closely.

3) A pair will form as the odds of having all male or all female in (6) fish is very unlikely.

4) When you see two that hang out together/close and harass the others, you have your pair.

5) Remove the (4) remaining to another tank and you might just get lucky and get another pair from the (4).

6) After your pair is solid, give them several weeks/months. Then you should be able to use the male or female (once you know which is which) as a “sexing fish. Or in other words if you have an aggressive male and you add a male he will fight with it, or if you add a female he will court it or the female will fight it.

But, remember to watch closely and be ready to pull the harased fish out right away. Bangaii can be efficient killers when they want to be and a good male will wipe his competition out in no time. IME
