Question How should I upgrade?

Upgrading from a 55 sumpless to a 90 w/ 20 sump/fuge, almost double the water volume. Do I treat it just like a move combined with a 50% water change?

I've moved the tank a few times, with no losses, so I know what to expect if it's like that. Is there anything else for which I should be prepared?

Advice welcomed

Make sure the new added saltwater is mixed for 24 hours and is the same specific gravity. Additionally, make sure the new water is aerated well. When you add that much non=aerated water, the dissolved Oxygen can drop quickly.

You probably already know this from your previous moves, but if you have a sandbed, moving it will cause a cycle event.

The number one thing to be prepared for is how easy it will be to bring new stuff home from the LFS b/c of all the free space you have now!

Depending on the pump and how you plumb the returns...
1. Make sure the sump can handle the water volume during power outage.

2. Make sure the pump restarts properly in the event of power loss.

3. Make sure you incorporate some type of device(depending on your set up) for trapping micro bubbles so they don't return to the main tank.

4. Make sure all wiring under the stand for sump pumps, etc. have drip loops and are GFCI protected.

5. If you are drilling the sump for a return pump to be mounted externally then add another bulk head and valve( 1") for a drain for water changes.

6. If you have any more questions just ask.

I moved from 55 to 90 with all my sand from my 55. I had minimal (if any) cycle from it. I treated it like a very large water change. Of course, temp and salinity are very important when adding that much water.

I was just VERY careful with the sand. I moved it with a frisbee, digging to the very bottom of the sand in sections, then placing it gently in the new tank.

I still want to know what you were doing at the shop in a dress, high heels and a wig.
