I have a lot of small starfis on my rock, I pull off 20 to 30 every 3 to 4 days. How can I control this problem?

Are they harming anything?

Something to consider is that if they are reproducing in that great of numbers, you must have plenty for them to eat. What's going to eat that extra food if they're not in the tank to do it?

As long as they are not harming anything, why get rid of them at all? Just don't like them or ...?

When they run out of food, the population will decline. Otherwise, if you just remove then, your nitrates will likely go up even higher.

I've read that they eat them but never seen it actually confrmed. It'll work until the shrimp runs out of dinner but it still doesn't address the question of what will eat the excess food that the stars are feeding on?

Hi,

See here for information on these stars. It is likely they are beneficial animals in your system. As capncapo has indicated, all things in our systems are interconnected - so, it might be a useful exercise for you to try to think through what will happen if you remove them.

I had what sounds like a similar animal. The population reached an uncountable number, they were every where. I found this a good excuse to add a "harly" shrimp that I had been wanting. A few months later he wiped the stars out almost completely. I lost the shrimp during an extended power outage and the stars slowly returned. Later I introduced 6 cerith (I believe) snails which in a few months have reached almost epic numbers. The stars have again started to decline. I would guess they compete with cerith snails for food.
