Sorry, I had to say it. Sun corals are NONphotosynthetic, so they won't care if you've got your tank in a lightless basement all day or with 5 kajillion watts of metal halide lighting. Ok, it might, cause that'd be damned hot and they DO like to open up when it's darker, but the point is the amount of light doesn't matter. They seem to be pretty hardy, and I'd say anyone that really wants to keep sun corals and has the time and energy to devote to feeding them constantly can keep them.

Well, depends how much time you feed them. For example you can feed them every 2days, but you will have to feed them more than everyday.

I on the other hand feed it everyday, but I'm having a hard time feeding it. If you have 250w MH's, you might consider placing on the bottom of your tank. Depends how deep your tank is, making sure that it doesn't get to much lighting or the tissues with get damage.

2 400s on my suns in a 75, no tissue damage. Nanocubeboy, the polyps come right out whether the light is on or not. Just keep at it. It should work eventually.

I noticed that they do not like nitrates at all. I had problems keeping them in a 12 gallon nano-cube. I fed them all the time but they receeded. Having them in such a small tank causes water quality to go down because of all the food always present. IMO not good for a small tank but it can definitely be done with a lot of effort. Good luck

i have some of mine in a 12 & they're doing great. i take all out to feed in a separate container, though, as not to foul the water.

i fill a large (i have 5 different suns) container with tank water around 8:30 at night every other day or sometimes twice a week depending upon how tired i am that night. i put some cyclop-eeze in the water to get them to come out if they're not already. then when they're out i target feed each polyp with a mixture of cyclop-eeze, f1 & mysis. then i let them sit there & finish eating for about half an hour or more and then return them to their tanks. i've been using this method for about 6 months or so and all my suns have grown like weeds! i've even seen some tiny little suns on random parts of my live rock (not the rocks the suns rest on).

It doesn't matter. They are found on overhangs on the reef.

same way as in our tanks. they hang on the walls of the caves with their polyps extended, when food floats by their tentacles grab it.

I think because thats how they would feed in the wild were food would pass them all night long.In our fish tanks when the lights are off there isn't much food present unless your constantly feeding at night.
