I personally didn't agree with his stand on most issues, but I was always impressed at the sincerity of his convinctions. Despite all the problems and controversy facing the Church today, in the simplest of terms, he was just a man...a very good man. For that goodness, he has my respect.

I just saw the footage of when he visited the man who had tried to assassinate him to forgive him. What a beautiful lesson for all of us. His legacy will continue.....

I saw him at Madison Square Garden as a teenager and, while I had my issues with the church, he was an inspiring and charismatic man. I still remember it clearly over 20 years ago, and we all know how hard it is to make a lasting impression on a teenager.

May he rest in peace.

I'm quite concerned about the next pope to be elected.very hardline views as to where he thinks the church should go and do. On the other hand ,I'm not a catholic either.... but still...

He took the time to go to a Mosque, he visited the Eastern Orthodox, he even prayed with the Jews. The leader of the Catholic Church set an example for all of us, to reach out to the other faiths. We need to learn to accept each other and each other's beliefs. Oh yeah, and I just became Catholic last year.

Why be sad? Why not celebrate the accomplishments of his life? He certainly did a lot to bring the church out of the dark ages of some of its processes and beliefs. That and he's no longer suffering.

He is in a better place. I personally believe the Catholic church focues too much on "Religion" and not enough on its practical implications in everyday life.

What makes you say that? I'm a Catholic (converted from Methodist church) and I don't see it that way. The Catholic church by far exceeds the Protestants for services to the poor etc IME. If that's not a "practical implication", I don't know what is.

Granted, the church still has a long way to go on some issues but is socially more advanced than the Protestant churches.

History will be very kind to the legacy of John Paul II. He took a very powerful position within Religion and changed the world, not only for the 1 billion or so Roman Catholics, but for all. Although I am not RC or do I subscribe to his views, I respect the man, his convictions and his leadership by example. There are few people in the history of the modern world who can compare.

There is a lesson in his life for all of us . . . we just need to find it.
