I have two 20 gal(I think) from agri supply not sure if there ldpe. One that has a high-low auto-top off so that I make 15or so gal of ro-di at once to offset TDS creep, this one feeds the tank. The other for salt. The two combined works nicely as I only add salt before changes, this leaves me with 40 gal of salt of fresh if needed. The guy that came up with auto top-off I hope is a millionaire. The 90 now that it's in the kitchen has to be top off the old fashion way. What a pita Its' been so long I don't know why I even had a tank when I used to lug water everday!!!

I'm thinking of sticking 2 20g High tanks in the cabinet. Anyone know if they are tempered glass?

LB- Which top off system did you go with?

Looks great so far...maybe I should replumb my system and have you do the plumbing!!

As for Auto Top-Off, I recommend Aquahub dot com...I used them for my build, and I really like the setup...they give you everything you need, including the MJ600, 1/2 OD tubing, wires, floats, float holder, electric project box, relay, etc...I got the premium pack...I think, or is it the delux? It was $49...great setup...

They also now have a system for hydroponic plants...surge system for $79...wonder if it would work with a MJ1200 as a wavemaker system...would be neat to try...

I don't believe they bother with tempering on 20g's but the LFS should have an AGA catalog which will tell you for sure on each tank size.

Latest Updates

Yesterday I picked up my bulbs, Phosban reactors, and I am also going to replace all my RO/DI filter cartridges.

Today I finished the plumbing outdoors for the return pump and chiller. Currently they are both recirculating a 5 gallon bucket of vinegar to get them all spiffy for the new tank.

I also did more rock work...will need to continue this part tomorrow.

I also managed to paint the bottom of the tank today (black) since I am going bare bottom and I like the black look:

This is what I plan on using for my auto top-off:

http://autotopoff.com/products/DS1/index.htm

It will turn on an aqua lifter and feed water through my Kalk stirrer.

I decided to use 2 20gal High aquariums for my top off and mixed salt.

How wide is that tank? Is everything gonna be under the tank or is that space at a premium? What are ya using as your sump?

The tank is 24" wide. bblair had the stand built extra wide to fit the custom sump...I have over 4 square feet of available space next to the sump (which is where I am putting the top-off and salt tanks). There is also another cabinet to the right of the main stand that will hold my ballasts and other items.

My last day off I managed to get the following completed:

- Added a check valve to the return line to prevent a siphon from the tank during a power loss (plus some ball valves and unions for maintenance of the check valve)

- Cleaned the canopy and fixed some loose screws

- Cleaned the side cabinet

- Added supports under the tank in the crawl space

- Finished all plumbing for the chiller and return pump

- Opened my galaxy ballasts only to realize I need a proprietary cord for each in order to connect my MH's. Grrrrrrrr Ordered them today from Marine Depot.

- Replaced the missing exhaust fan in the canopy (which has 4)

- Added a RO/Di drain line connection to my sewer line.

- Tonight I finish my rock work... I'll take some pictures later.

i suggest ditching the check valve, it will eventually stick open; use a siphon break above the water level in the return pipe

Hi Anthony,
I was going to do that but I don't like the salt spray the siphon break creates. I added unions on either side of the check valve so I can pull it and do routine maintenance to keep it functional. Hopefully it will work OK...

salt spray is preferable to salty floors...

how often do you plan to clean it? I suspect you'll likely have to replace it often, if it is the one with the rubber seal. since it is open all the time due to the return being operational it tends to stay in that position.

I'll drill a couple holes just below the water line for insurance...I am determined not to have salt spray with this setup.

Did you have one Anthony?

I'm not sure that you really need any type of anti-siphoning safeguards, 220 gallons isn't really that much if you think about it . . . nothing Bounty couldn't take care of, it's the quilted quicker picker-upper!

On a serious note though, consider where your check valve is located and how easy it will be to take it off and clean it. If its going to take some effort to get to it, then you're less likely to clean it. Anthony does have a good point, that rubber and salt water do not go well together.
