I soak my pumps in vinegar to get rid of coralline and any calcium build up.

For external pumps, you can remove the volute and soak in vinegar.

For external pumps that you don't want to take apart, you can hook up a small power head to pump vinegar/water mixture through the large pump, then back into the bucket with the power head. Let this recirculate.

Another vote for vinegar. I usually will soak for a couple of hours in a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water, although when rushed I will use straight vinegar.

I run the pump overnight in a 50/50 solution of vinegar and water. Then, remove and see if there is anything that may need to be scrubbed off. Finally, thoroughly rinse to prevent getting vinegar in the tank.

this is a great idea. i'm going to try it. i was trying to figure out how to clean my sequence pumps now that they've been running a year.

That's exactly the pump I thought of this for! I have zero desire to remove and open up my vertically mounted hammerhead closed loop pump. Instead, I will just connect a smaller pump to it via the true unions, and use that small pump to clean out the sequence.
